Any Diabetic DUers?

My mom recently got diagnosed with diabetes. She had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with my sister and I and the doctors said she would eventually be diabetic later on in life.

She is not on insulin yet. The doctors told her diet and exercise should regulate it.

The problem is with her diet.
She eats lots of fruits, vegetables, etc...but does not eat any kind of meat.
The doctors told her that meat actually is pretty good for you to eat when diabetic.
She's been really depressed since finding out she has it because of her diet.
She says how her life is over because she can't eat anything any more.

My question is:

What can I tell her regarding her diet??? From any of your experience, what foods do you eat if diabetic?

Thanks for any advice or info. you can give me.

:)

1. Well, I eat all sorts of stuff. I just do it in moderation, get in my
exercise, and take my meds. I stay away from the white stuff like sugar, enriched flour, things like that - the breads and whatnot that I eat are all whole grain. There are many valuable resources online.

3. She can eat a lot of really good stuff...
I cut out potatoes and sugary stuff, but I still occasionally have stuff. I'm borderline, not yet full blown. I eat lots of fruit, lean meats, veggies, that kind of thing. I still eat French Fries, but make sure I get them from places that aren't as greasy as others. She can get a few diabetic diet ideas from the internet. i know there is one from the American Heart Association or something like that. It's actually got a lot of variety. Good luck to your mom. It's not easy at first, but once she gets used to sugar free, the sugar free stuff will start to taste a lot better.

6. Oh, and Dark Chocolate...
New studies have revealed that dark chocolate increases diabedic bodies' ability to process sugar.

7. You may want to PM Shockra
She's veg and diabetic so she may have some advice to pass on to your mother.

Also, take a look at Dr. McDougall's site or books, I seem to recall that he's had good results with diabetics on his diet (which is focused on whole grains and other unrefined starches and veggies with no oils or animal products,) though I don't recall the details- I wasn't paying a ton of attention to that section because there's no history of diabetes in my family.
