FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Residents of a Miami-Dade neighborhood found an unwelcome new resident had moved into their area this week: a 360-pound, 11-foot American crocodile.
Veteran trapper Todd Hardwick captured the crocodile earlier this week. He said the creature is the biggest crocodile he had ever seen in urban Miami-Dade County.
The endangered American crocodile was relocated Thursday instead of being destroyed.
Unlike alligators which have been blamed for at least three deaths in Florida this year, American crocodiles have never been documented killing a human in Florida. A biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says there have, however, been reports of fatal attacks in other countries.
Officials estimate there are between 800 and 1,000 crocodiles in Florida. That's compared to about one million alligators.
