I need virus protection
that is not a resource hog. It took me 3 hours to install, than un-install the free McAfee that comes with Comcast. My computer was crawling, it took 20 minutes to re-boot!

I have an AMD 550 with 256 RAM, win'98

1. You don't need no virus protection....
you need an Apple. There's never been a virus yet to attack an Apple.

3. LOL

Nothing is immune and nothing is emergency high-priority yet, though I'll submit that any *nix based OS is going to be more secure from the ground up. (OS X = FreeBSD)

22. Well ...

You could do Linux or OpenBSD without buying a new computer. I've actually resurrected old, seemingly worthless computers with Linux.

As for a Windoze virus scanner, I'll add to the list of those suggesting AVG.

9. OS X = MACH
with a bunch of BSD userland and a legacy Apple API crufted on top.

For security, do an actual BSD (open is preferable) or a decent Linux distribution.

For non-CPU-hogging virus scanning, try ClamWin.

Open-source is, as a rule, better.

7. And you need to learn...
not to post such an inflamatory answer to an obviously light hearted comment. I'm a recent convert. I have an evangelistic zeal.

...If you will excuse the fuck out of me.

Manners will get you far in this life, son.

11. Then maybe you should learn some.
Unless you think responding to a request for help/information with a smugly condescending remark that does nothing to address the problem the person you're responding to is having constitutes good manners, in which case your idea of 'manners' is pretty far removed from any I'm acquainted with.

12. You are my new best friend!
It was obnoxious but I'm holding my temper. It's been a very frustrating night and I really didn't need the Apple stock holders tonight...thanks for the recommendation

17. You're welcome...
AVG should work pretty well for you; the minimum requirements to run on Windows are a 486 processor and 32MB of RAM, so it should work on your machine with no noticeable lag at all.

14. A buddy of mine in the biz says NOD32 is the best
Free 30 day trial, available through download.com

As posted above, Avast and AVG are both good and both free. Finding the free version of AVG is getting a little harder. They also warn you repeatedly that you will get no support, but this hasn't been a problem. It auto-updates daily. I've been using it since I got this little laptop and haven't run into any trouble. I seem to recall that Avast was better on resource use (my previous computer also ran Win 98) so you may prefer trying it. It's also available at download.com.

No doubt you know all about Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Zone Alarm and Firefox. All also free and incredibly useful.

20. I 4th AVG and would add
ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=nav_za free firewall
and AdAware http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (also free). Those three and using Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/ for your browser should protect you from most viruses and hi-jackers. Good Luck!
