Freelance proofreading/editing

I've heard there are opportunities out there. Anybody got the skinny? I used to work in this field (in house). I need some income until my other business takes off. Help!

2. There are plenty of freelance opportunities,

in fact, there are a couple of web sites devoted just to free-lance work in writing, proofreading and editing. I don't have them with me right now because I'm at work, but they're in Writer's Digest. I can PM you with the web sites later on tonight, if that's okay, or you can PM me if I forget.

Also, check with your local newspapers, both the daily and the weeklies and independents, if there are any in your area, you never know when they might need such help. And put an ad in your local paper and/or magazine as well.

6. Local magazines are best for me.

I proofread several local magazines. I get my money on the spot. Now, they expect a 24-hour turnaround time, but it's worth it to me. For one 80-page magazine, I pick it up at noon and have it back to them by 7AM the next day. They hand me a check for $300. (That's not much in many places, but in parts of my city it easily pays the rent.)

Go to your local health food store and bookstores and pick up a single copy of every magazine they've got. I got many of my jobs by going through them with red pens and marking all the mistakes, then sending it to them with a note that says something to the effect of, "Looks like you need a proofreader." LOL. If you pull it off funny, not smart-ass, you have a good shot of getting a job.
