I was talking to a PREGNANT co-worker last week
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 09:15 AM by underpants
I asked her when she was due and she said..................."Tuesday".

Next Tuesday? (today)

"Yes" she said

Well uh what are you doing here?

Oh I will be here until it is time. If it happens this weekend I won't be here Monday but if it doesn't happen until Tuesday I will be here Monday.

She was here yesterday and I hear today that she is indeed in the hospital (doing fine). It is her second child and it was funny how matter of fact she was about the whole thing.

2. Mrs. XNASA was much the same during her second pregnancy.
When she delivered our first son, we went to the hospital way too early. Then there was the 17 hour labor. The whole thing was a huge ordeal.

When she delivered son #2, we barely made it to the hospital in time. I left her at the Emergency Room door, then drove a few blocks to drop off a couple of stage speaker monitors at some friend's apartment who had a gig that night. When I got back to the hospital, 30 minutes later, she was already in a room and her water had broke. Her doctor was en route and showed up just in time in a sweater and jeans. The doc threw on a smock and took a peak. 10 minutes and only two "pushes" later, our second son was born.

Mrs. XNASA said, "That was easy. I feel like taking a nap." So the nurses took our son to the nursury, Mrs. XNASA fell asleep, and I went to my friend's gig. The whole thing took about an hour.

3. Maybe they should put in a drive-thru window
Geez.

To do list:
Pick up dry cleaning
deliver speaker equipment
Gallon of milk
Give birth.

Well you know what they say about women in third world countries and giving birth out in the field/rice pattie. I don't mean anything bad by that.

4. I went to work the day my son was born
for an hour and a half. I sat down and handed off a project to a colleague, told everyone else that if they have a problem with my software to talk to me about it in three months, and went home at 10:30. My son was born at 7:45 that evening. This, and the fact that I gave birth without drugs, gave me a reputation for toughness at the office. All those young hipster guys I worked with were a bit intimidated.

But I myself was heavily sedated. It goes without saying.

17. Ha ha ha! You men are such WIMPS!
In the last hour before my son was born, I was given an epidural... The nurses had to help my husband out of the room. He started to slide down the wall when he saw THAT needle. :eyes: :7

18. I was joking, of course. I was quite lucid throughout.
I was there, for both births, from start to finish. Mrs. XNASA refused to use an epidural both times. Local only. She's quite a trooper. Can't say it surprises me.

Some of us are wimps. Some of us aren't.

24. Were they "lemon drop" babies? How much did they weigh?
There's quite a bit of difference in having a 6 1/2 pounder as a 2nd child, versus having an almost 10 pounder as a first child...... :)

8. A friend of mine was jumping horses at 8 1/2 months pregnant
Edited on Tue Jul-29-03 09:24 AM by SoCalDem
took two weeks off and was right back at it.. Her only concession?? She had to wear a chest binder because she was nursing the baby and the jumping "hurt" ..

Women are not the pansies that the medical profession has tried to make us..

Insurance companies and hospitals have made childbirth a "condition" warranting "treatment"..

disclaimer:.. I happen to be one of the ones who DID need massive intervention so I did not DIE, but I am not the norm..

Most women actually do better with less intervention at time of delivery..Anyone who has had a baby "the normal way" , that I have spoken to has told me that flat on your back with your feet in the air is NOT the way nature intended..

Doctors do things that way for THEIR benefit...not the benefit of the mother and baby... and when there is "cutting" involved, it's usually becaus ethey have "rushed" the mother and not allowed the tissues to stretch naturally..

I am so glad that moms are starting to stand up for what THEY want instead of what the doctor wants..

When MY kids were born, fathers were not even allowed into delivery..:(

11. There was a military study
I read at one point -- I'll try to find a link here in a minute -- about women, and their superior ability to endure pain.

Probably six million dollars spent on something my mom could've told 'em with a wave of her hand to drive the point home... :)

10. When my daughter was born, I was still working in the salon...
and she was a week overdue. There was nothing better to do. The days would have dragged if I had gone on leave before she was born. I left work at 6, felt funny by 9, left for the hospital at 10. IMO it's the best way to do it. I would have done it with our son if my husband hadn't freaked out about it so much.

13. I worked the day I delivered
This was 24 years ago. I worked the midnight shift at a hospital as a nurses aid. I felt crampy, was soooooo busy I didn't have time to find my butt with both hands, so I wrote down the time of my "cramps" on my notes as I scrambled from room to room. By 7 in the morning I sat down and noted my "cramps" were 9 minutes apart, then 8 minutes, then 7 then 6 ... uh oh!

So, I went home and packed a bag, (wasn't supposed to be due for several days yet) came back to the hospital and delivered later that day.

In those days, a 3 day stay was normal. These days, because insurance is so cut throat and ridiculous they practically discharge women right out of the delivery room. Anymore, a drive by delivery is no joke! But, unless there are problems, most women can work up until labor starts.

PS - And they don't call it LABOR for nothin!

14. Did She Deliver By C-Section?
Many times, they know ahead of time that a C-section is required, especially if the mother has a small bone structure and the baby is large. And those are scheduled.

C-sections are scheduled other times, too. I remember when my daughter was born (via last-minute C-section) the day after Christmas in 1976. While she and my ex-wife were still in the hospital, the maternity ward was filling up with mothers who had C-sections scheduled before New Year's so they could take the tax deduction for the entire year.......

27. My first C-section was not scheduled
18 hours, an oxytocin drip and much heaving and hawing later my OB sits on my bed giggling,"You're not really built for child-bearing and the baby's head us HUGE." I was not my usual chipper self so I screamed at her "IT TOOK THIS LONG TO FIGURE THAT OUT???"

The day before the second I was underneath my car, rather annoyed that my protruding belly prevented me getting those optimum 2 inches further.
A man passed the driveway and yelled in a horrified voice, "WHAT do you think you're DOING???" I wriggled out, gave him a look that would drop a mastedon and said, "Changing my oil, DO YOU MIND?"

25. I'm just used to pregnant women thinking the world stops for them
Hell at some of the malls around here (Va.) there are special parking spots for "those with small children and pregnant women", I park in them all the time. I have gotten some dirty looks but no one has ever said anything. If they did I would just say "I've got a two year old son" (which I don't) the sign doesn't say you have to HAVE them with you.

26. Isn't the hysteria about wine and pregnancy FUNNY! Egads I know
a chick that won't even have a SIP if she thinks they're going to have SEX.

Like a glass of wine will effect the eggs or something?

Now that I think about it, she's too uptight to get knocked up, I bet. So they'll mortgage the house to get that in vitro, all because she won't chill out.

Hmmmmm........
