Historical Start Trivia #3
The following is a historical trivia quiz. The first DUer without a star to answer correctly will have a donation to DU made in their user name, earning them a star. Members already having stars may play if they choose, provided they send me a private message upon confirmation of a correct answer giving me the name of a non-starred DUer they would like to have a star.

Air Force One has taken off one more times than it has landed, but it has never crashed. Why? Be specific.

1. I know that one, thanks Discover Channel
But I have a star and I don't really know any other DUers that I would like a star given to.

So I'm not gonna play.

I've used it before.

It's won me a lot of beers at historical gatherings. :-)

3. I never thought of using it to win beer. That's a good idea.
If no one gets it soon I'll find someone that wants a star and answer the thing. But somewhere there must be some starless DUer who knows this, and I don't want to take away the satisfaction they will get out of earning themselves a star.

4. I'm a bit surprised ...

Last time I used this, it started a discussion about it...took awhile for someone to get it, but it came pretty quick because of the discussion.

I may have done this too late at night.

The part of my brain that answers questions like this doesn't work!

OP and also longtime DUer Melsky has returned and is currently starless.

I was thinking of giving them stars, but I already gave out the two in my budget.

7. Okay, since it's getting late and people want to know... Here goes.
Air Force One is the designation used for the presidential aircraft when the POTUS is on board. When he is not on board, it ATC would refer to the aircraft by it's tail number.

President Ford took his oath of office while Nixon was flying home in disgrace. The plane took off as Air Force One, but landed as SAM 27000.

I guess Melsky would be my star choice, provided my memory serves correct, thanks to undisclosedlocation's nomination.

9. Well done ...

Thanks.

Melsky will have a star as soon as I can get it done.

10. I watch way too much infotainment type programs.
Your other trivia questions I was having trouble with, but Discovery Channel produced an hour-long TV doc about Air Force One a few years back.

You can't watch "too much" of that.

I ran across this tidbit while reading a book about something seemingly unrelated. It was a "hmmm...how interesting" moment for me, but then a couple months later I was at a gathering of what I call my "history nut" friends and we started a little trivia contest for beer. A professional historian in attendance who is a somewhat famous Presidential historian thought he was going to stump us with that question. With a salad in my mouth at dinner, the question was asked, and I suddenly realized I actually could answer it. On that night, the stakes were the bar tab for the table, which was no small sum. :-)

Not that you needed to know that, but I felt like sharing.

Once again, thanks for playing.

12. That's a cool story.
That's when victory is sweetest, when they think no one knows.
