About "The O.C." -- and a question: what about YOUR hometown?
A friend at work can get my goat anytime he wants to by telling others, "oh, yeah, Kim's FROM the O.C. - aren't ya, Kim? ;)"

Grr.

I wasn't born in Orange County, but I grew up there, from about age 10 months. Now, I do not like what's been done to downtown Huntington Beach, and I don't like much of what's happened elsewhere in my hometown. But it's still my hometown, and it's part of Orange County.

Know this: Not once, in my 35+ years of living in H.B. and other places in Orange County, did anyone ever refer to the county as "The O.C." The moniker is a bastard of some asshole's imagination.

Residents of The City detest hearing their town called "Frisco." (Unless that's changed - someone tell me it has not.) What other city & town nicknames are loathed by the natives?

What about your hometown?

"The O.C." Sweet crispy Jesus. :eyes:

Shout to DUer Ava for planting this rant's seed . . . thanks, Ava :hi:

1. All I know is it's a lame-ass show.
Albeit with some decent music, haha.

4. I dunno about derogatory nicknames
But I really can't stand it when people assume Oakland is a giant ghetto.

There are ghetto areas of Oakland, and there are nice areas of Oakland.

Why is this such a difficult concept to understand?

5. I had a joke about the Raiders but I don't want to offend.
I've driven through Oakland a couple of times. Never seemed all ghetto to me. It IS offensive.

11. Why is it so hard to understand that Oakland is not 100% ghetto?
Hello? Raiders?

(that was it - it would've been funnier off the cuff)

:hi:

(But honestly, the well-dressed thug EVERYWHERE either wears Yankees', Iverson, or Raiders' stuff.)

7. Far as I know, saying 'Frisco' in San Francisco
is still an easy way to get eye daggers shot at you... unless you're among bikers.

I hardly ever hear "The City" anymore, though. The Warriors should've kept it on their uniforms, along with the cable car logo. That was seriously cool.

(Sudden thought: In baseball, road uniforms traditionally have the name of the city. What do the Angels' roadies say? "Los Angeles of Anaheim"?)

9. I noticed on Myspace,
that apparently a lot of people refer to Tacoma (WA), as "Tac-town," and "T-Town". And neighboring Puyallup as "P-Town". I think that's really dumb, and gave my brother shit for it when he did it. But, he ignored me.

they call it "Los Anchorage," as in ugly urban sprawl, geared more to automobiles than pedestrians.

How long ago was your mom here? It's changed quite a bit in the past few years. We've got a "beautification" thing going on. More parks, more flowers, stuff like that.

20. Oh, you guys are cracking me up.
Born in 1958 in Newport Beach, Ca., which was the closest hospital at the time. We lived in San Clemente (thus I grew up there); I split my time between the grandparents house in Laguna Beach and San Clemente. Lived in either Orange County, San Bernardino County, or Riverside County (frequently visiting San Diego County - hanging around in that square-ish Southern California area for all of my nearly 48 years). I have NEVER heard Orange County referred to as "the O.C." Even though my grandparents owned quite a bit of property, I lived a middle-class life, and it was nothing like what I see in commercials for the show.

Although .... remember I have bored you guys with tales of growing up in a conservative household, telling you that conservatives tend to lead two lives - a 'pretend life' for the community, and a soap opera at home (but I think that's a different story). I spent most of the time with my paternal grandparents - my folks tended to imbibe alcohol pretty consistently.

21. Music City, USA! Yee haw!....
...I live in Nashville, and the only time you see a cowboy hat, or cowboy boots, is when a tourist is wearing them. Yet, that's the perception.

26. Thank goodness that when I was in Nashville...
I wore neither hat nor boots. :D

I worked in country radio. I wore jeans to work in the winter and shorts in the summer, but I tried to avoid "Western wear" at all times. I never wanted to be a stereotype.

I took a sort of working vacation to Nashville one summer, and I had a lot of interaction with folks from Music Row. None of them wore the so-called Western gear either. None. (As an aside, I was music director, so I'd had a lot of phone interaction with the record promoters anyway, but it was great to see them in action, especially on "chart night.")

23. No Californian calls the state "Cali", only outsiders do that.
of course here we call Maryland "Murlin" sometimes to imitate a local accent.

and there is a move to get people to stop refering to Prince Georges County in Maryland as "P.G.", which virtually everyone does. Maybe that could be a new series: "The P.G.".

31. I remember HB just north of the pier during the early 70's.
Those funky-cool bungalows, total old school surf culture. On the flip side I was living in La Harbra and got in to a lot of fights with the locals trying to learn to surf between 17th and Golden West. Even then there was a kind of skin-head attitude from some of the locals, and especially the cops.

Personally, I hate that term. Sounds too much like KFC. I think it just dumbs things down. I blame those that use internet and text messaging shorthand. Lazy bastard.
