Police: Man Gets On School Bus, Hits Boy
Edited on Thu May-18-06 09:26 AM by DS1
JOHNSON, Vt. -- A 50-year-old highway worker in Vermont has been charged with disorderly conduct in connection with an assault on a 12-year-old boy, authorities said.

Police said Chris Perkins claimed a boy riding in a school bus made an inappropriate gesture toward him as Perkins was driving his truck near Johnson.

Police said Perkins boarded the school bus through the rear emergency door and then hit the boy.

6. Since when is physical violence ok as a response to a gesture? Much
less violence on a goddam child no less. Next thing you know it will be ok to invade other countries because you don't like them. Nevermind.

7. And so it begins...
If it's any consolation to you, you are RIGHT. Please look into those new sense-of-humor implants, though. They do wonders.

The kid will live. And karma can take a swipe at kids now and then, too. You don't actually think of 12 year old boys as "innocents", do you?

It's not I'm calling for the man to get off scot-free. I just don't feel the least bit sorry for the boy. He'll live, and he may be better for the experience.

I've had my ass kicked a time or two - and for no reason at all. I don't waste any time resenting the poor dumb schmucks who jumped me. Violence happens. All the time. And zero-tolerance policies on violence have NOT eliminated it. If anything, they may have shut down outlets for conflicts so that instead of fistfights after school - we now have Columbines.

Whatever.

9. I'm w/ you on this one
When someone acts like an asshole, it doesn't give someone else permission to act like a violent asshole.

:hi:

8. My wife and I have talked about that before
In a world where there are no repercussions for inpoliteness then you'll end up with a very rude society. It's not that it's ok to have this guy just board a school bus and smack the kid, but it makes you wonder...

I wonder if people were more randomly polite in the 'wild west' when everyone was packing heat.

Especially with kids, not just today, but it seems for a few generations, the attitude that they can do whatever they want is prevalent. Should we reinstate a system where you can take violent revenge upon people for disresepcting you verbally or with a hand gesture? Obviously not. Yet I would definately like to see our society become more polite.

I recall when I was younger I was driving, with three other young men, down to the city. We were on a two lane road prior to getting on the highway, and there was a man in a jeep driving extremely recklessly. Swerving in and out of the lanes and going fast. Somehow, proving that kind of driving doesn't get you places faster, we were past him again, and I was in the left lane driving the speed limit next to another car. He swerved behind me and blared on his horn, speeding up and nearly hitting my car a few times. He came so close so fast before backing down you could actually feel the air pressure from his jeep pushing mine. Finally we get onto the highway and he speeds around us, pulls in front of us and slams on his brakes. His tires locked and the Jeep skidded and hopped towards us (locking your brakes going 70 isn't a bright idea in a jeep). I avoided him, and he harrased us continually for another few miles before we pulled off the interstate. He pulled off in front of us and braked, turning his jeep sideways blocking the offramp. He then hopped out of his car and came towards our car screaming and yelling. The four of us got out, and I politely but firmly told him just to get back in his car, or he'd regret it. Seeing the four of us, he backed down, got back in his jeep, and left.

Who acts that way? Would that guy act that way if by doing so, a person like me would actually attack him, or even draw a weapon and shoot him? I don't know. I don't know the answer. I just hate how insane and rude our society has become and long for a kinder America that probably only exists in a fairy tale.
