Have you ever fallen down the stairs and just not quite figured out HOW?
(PAGING GOP IS EVIL....)

I wiped out on my stairs again today. The last time was a few months ago when it was raining. I was dashing out to the car to close the windows, had on the trusty Uggs and WHOMP. BAM. On my ass bump bump bumping down the stairs. GREAT bruise. BEST bruise EVER to be seen on my gorgeous ass.

Well today was different. I had on sandals and noticed just a second before that the sole was a bit slick on the tile in the kitchen. But going down the terra cotta tiled stairs... I just don't know what happened... and there I was kinda of tumbling slowly, feet fumbling and going in different directions, and the ankle, the ankle, the ankle. OUCH. I cannot for the life of me figure out how I landed on the ankle wiping out down the stairs. I ended up on my butt, but not in a bad way, with my knees kind of up and my feet turned around under me. Thank GOODNESS the shoes are completely unscathed. No scrapes or damage. (If ya knew how much they cost!) And they're not high heels... very low in fact.

Good thing I drink a LOT of milk. Nothing is broken, just somewhat bruised and very stiff and sore.

Mystery accidents! Let's have em! And being drunk doesn't count!

1. While carrying a cup of coffee back down the stairs to get a
refill, I somehow slipped on the carpeted stairs and bumped down about 5 of them. I landed on the ceramic tile floor. Needless to say the coffee mug broke and coffee flew everywhere all over the walls :-).

I didn't break any bones, but I had some interesting shades of black, blue and green as bruises on my backside :eyes:

2. My wife had a similar accident
Slipped on the carpeted stairs while carrying her morning coffee. Twisted her ankle, however it shows where her real priorities are, she saved her coffee.

I rarely fall, but big accident thing is getting cut. I literally have had stiches from the top of my head to my toes, all from various cuts and slices I've taken:shrug:

:-). It all happened so fast though.

I guess I would rather sprain something than bleed :-(.

6. LOL. I fell up the stairs two years ago.
It was dark, it was late at night and I didn't want to wake anyone by turning on the lights. I fell up, hit my head on the half wall and ended up with a fractured skull, and an amazing black eye.

7. OMG I can't imagine how embarrassing it was trying to
explain those injuries. I'm glad that you're ok. :hi:

I am not very graceful at all. I live in Minneapolis therefore the steps on the bus are slippery in the wintertime. One day, as I was attempting to descend the bus stairs, I slipped. I was hanging onto the railing so tightly that I flung myself out of the bus 180 degrees with such a force that my plastic Caribou coffee mug got wedged under the front bus tire. The bus driver through the bus in park to check on me. Miraculously, I didn't injure myself, but the bus driver had to YANK my travel mug out because it was so forcefully wedged under the tire that I couldn't pull it out myself. Of course this was in front of a huge group of people who were waiting to get on the bus. **Takes a bow** I made a bunch of folks laugh that day. :hi:

Especially because I was hosting an 80th birthday party for my dad two days later.

I had to keep saying "No, I wasn't drunk, I'm just a klutz".

4. To help that bruise heal...
rub arnica gel on it several times a day. It's good stuff.

Sorry about your fall. It sounds like you need some no-slip strips.

9. yes
unfortunately, the last time it happened was about a week ago in front of my three year old. Now every time anyone goes down that set of stairs he says "be careful, don't want to fall like momma did"

I've done it a few times now and I don't know how it happens. My foot rolls under or something weird, same thing each time. Not always on stairs either. Just another thing to report to the neurologist and rheumatologist.

out... although lola and winky DID rush over to offer sympathy and support.

And thank GAWD the shoes are all right... that was my biggest worry.

They're my favorite, my comfy sandals.

41. My old German Shepherd once fell down the stairs.
She was emotionally scarred (and she already pretty neurotic). After that, she refused to go up or downstairs without having one of the humans say, "It's okay. You can do it." Then, she'd go up or down without a problem, even after she went blind.

Last time I fell down the stairs, it really hurt my ankle (I put a lot of weight on it as I fell). In a way I was glad though because it proves that my bones are still durable.

13. A couple years ago...
I was sleeping in my bed when the phone rang and woke me up. I got up out of bed to answer the phone...took one step and did a complete face-plant, I almost hit my head on the doorway. I guess my one leg was asleep because it did not do its job at all. I actually had to look down and see if it was still there. Ya never know leg pirates could have come in the middle of the night and stolen it. I had some nasty carpet burns but fortunately nothing more serious...and thankfully it has never happened again

14. fell down marble staircase, did 180, caught left railing, walked away
Two or three years ago at work I slipped on the marble staircase to the main lobby. It all happened so fast. Somehow in my plunge downward, I stayed upright. At the last possible moment I did a 180 spin toward the left handrail. I caught the left handrail at the bottom with my right hand (now facing up the stairs), and landed on both feet. Then I nonchalantly walked away as if nothing out of the ordinary happened. I was one lucky dude. I shutter when I think of what could have happened. Now, I always hold on to the handrail.

And I've got the video to prove it! I asked the security people if they caught my trip on the digital camera in the lobby. They did! And they gave me a copy.
:woohoo:

21. I had my feet slide out from under me
on the third step from the bottom. The outside wooden stairs to my friends log house were slush-covered on the lower steps. I was on my way down and bam...just like that I was on my backside. I threw my head forward to keep from banging my head and gave myself whiplash. I have a plate, four screws and a dozen pins from c-2 to c-6. I must have pulled stuff above and below the fusion because the sprain healed in about 4 weeks with no problems. I can't remember the last time I'd ever fallen. Sure made me feel foolish. Accidents happen when you don't expect them. Expecting them is the key.

25. My sister used to fall up the stairs.
She was short and she would get to running up the stairs so fast that she would step on her nightgown, and fall up the stairs. We used to pick on her about it. She would say the ghost would chase her up the stairs. I knew about the ghost and Mrs. Midgely was not that type of ghost. So we just thought she was overly scared. Well when she went to college and I started being the kid that was up later at night, I found out what was chasing her. It was this black thing that would block out all the light in the house and we had a lot of natural light from outside the house. this thing would rush at you in the dark and pass through you. I know now why she would run so fast.

30. I stepped off the top stair
inside the house and went head first down to the landing. I have no idea what happened, but I do know that my right leg was in bad shape afterwards. The bruise was black from the knee to the tips of my toes all the way around! I went to have it x-ray'd two days later because the pain was getting worse. They said they saw no fractures, but that it was swollen so bad they couldn't be a hundred percent sure. I had a HUGE hematoma just under the knee that the Dr aspirated 3 times to relieve the pressure, each time removing more than 30cc's of blood. That was on March 16th of this year, I STILL have a large raised bruise on my leg! It doesn't hurt anymore thank goodness. Dr says now it probaby did have a hairline fracture. Thankfully I was in the hospital a few days after that accident and confined to bed rest so I didn't have to walk on it. I think now that I fell, because of my very low iron level, I was not at all steady on my feet...

38. I wouldn't like that... that kinda scares me. I was alone when I blew
my knee up, dislocated it... in my house. A very secure house. With steel doors and an alarm. And a vicious dog who was VERY upset that I was sitting on the floor screaming and yelling for help at the top of my lungs.

You see, the fire department or the cops couldn't have gotten in without having to harm the dog... She was a very loyal but violent dog, prone to biting. YIKES.

Luckily I dragged myself to the landline phone and was able to get my dr. friend on the phone on the first try. It was a miracle she picked up, she was between patients. She had the key to my house and a subsequent rescue ensued, but it still took 4 hours all told.

OUCH.

I get scared being alone sometimes for that reason... I try to be extra careful.

42. just last month
Was standing on the stairs talking to my nephew who was at the top. Took a step back to go down, thinking I was standing on the landing. But I wasn't. It ended up with me in freefall sideways, falling eight steps, landing with my head on a hardwood floor. Broken eyeglasses, sprained thumb (!?), knot on head, lots of painful bruises. I asked my nephew later what it looked like. He said it was a lot like something from a Marx Bros. movie. How cool. He said I "whooped" twice. Whoop! Whooooop!

I'm usually keenly aware of what happened while I'm in the process of falling down the stairs.

In fact, I think I go through all seven stages: denial, anger, grief, acceptance, etc.
