because of the lyrical, poetic use of language. (My German isn't good enough to read Death in Venice in the original, so I can't really make a fair comparison.)
If you've seen the movie, but not read the book, you've cheated yourself. The movie is a story of a molestation, but the book is a masterpiece of word sculpture.
