As each of you know, it is now required that a minimum of 60 hours be put forth toward the launch. There are tremendous opportunities being presented with the new macom pieces and the new mattling gun delivery mechanism. The way the 60 sixty hours will be calculated will be based upon the time of the day that I receive an email from you when you are working at SSD, and the time I receive one when you leave. When you are at the LAO - I have a time card which you will use to demonstrate your work.

I expect 110% from each of you. If you cannot give this. I don't want you on my team.

As you probably know, I terminated a long-time friend, long-time employee yesterday. Should anyone be under the misconception that I am "soft", "easy" and am basically your "substitute school teacher" you are absolutely wrong.

I expect my computers to be used for work only. I expect my phones to be used for work only. Should you receive a personal call, keep it short.

Should you receive a personal email, I expect the email either not answered - or a brief note telling whoever is sending you emails at work to stop immediately. Should I go through machines, which I assure you, I will be doing, and I find anything to the contrary - you will be terminated immediately.

For those who think I am kidding, and do not get with this program - I will promise you that by Christmas eve 8:00 you will be gone.

If this is a 5 day work week, we're talking a mandatory 4 extra hours a day, that shit is insane, and illegal in more developed parts of the world. If I ever get a memo like this, I wouldn't just up and quit. I'd do it at the most inopportune time for management, and do it as loudly and embarrassingly as possible. I worked for a guy who once sent out the most demeaning letter to his employees. In fact it was so outrageous that the union steward filed a formal complaint. Unfortunately I didn't save it but basically it stated that all the employees were lazy, stupid and unpatriotic because they weren't giving their all....

My field of work involves work study and analysis and I can honestly say that there is no such thing as a quality 110%, its just a catch phrase.

require non-exempts to work beyond eight hours/day or 40 hours/week. Exempts, by the nature of their positions, are not obligated to specific hours/days but rather the time necessary to complete assignments or job functions.

Monahan is fucked if someone sues him for wrongful termination. In fact a case can be made for "constructive termination" based on unreasonable working conditions.

In the Heating and Air Conditioning I worked for our service guys would put in 80 hour weeks. I would ask why don't they work in shifts like fireman do. Then the next week they only put in a 40 hour week while the installation guys put in an average of 50 hour week. I liked some of the people I worked with but my boss was a fundy dumbass. He fired me but I got the last laugh because they demoted him to just a pure desk jockey because he kept this one guy who wouldn't show up for work. They would've fired him but he's the founders son:7

where long hours are required of everyone to get something achieved on time. One example was when I worked in the Inertial Upper Stage program at Boeing - when there was a shuttle launch, everyone worked long hours right before the shuttle launch to make sure our part of it was as flawless as possible. Right before a market launch of a product, it's de rigueur to test the holy hell out of it and do last minute bug fixes and updates of it. Tax time is mandatory overtime for an accounting firm. Etc. It is usually not wise to work people long hours for any great length of time, as their productivity starts to drop off dramatically as fatigue increases. People need recharge time. It's often cheaper in the long run to hire extra help for a push if you don't need highly specialized or trained people.

However, there are ways and ways of motivating people for the extra time. Bitching at them and intimidating them is the way idiots and assholes do it.

By the way, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act, it is quite legal to require non-exempt employees to work more than 40 hours a week (in fact, there are no mandatory federal maximums); it is not, however, legal to work them more than 40 hours a week without paying time and a half.
