How would you approach a neighbor who has filed a complaint against you?

Yesterday in my mailbox there was a notice from my leasing office informing me that I was commiting an infraction on my lease. Apparently someone complained that I had been making excessive noise and playing music too loud in my place. The only person I think it can be would be the person living below me. No one has come to me in the past and talked to me about it so to get this notice is a little frustrating. I would like to talk to who I think it is but I don't know how to approach them. They never seem to be home when I have tried knocking on their door.

the landlords, not giving you some dopey letter. Explained the situation, heard your point of view.

I talked to my upstairs neighbour about music (not excessively loud, but I could hear it a bit down here) and he seemed cool about it.

I would talk to managment, get the whole story. Also, I would suggest turning down the bass a bit, if that's the problem. :)

3. Yeah....It's a managment company...

They manage quite a few units so I am not shocked that they sent me a letter instead of talking to me personally but yeah it seemed like something that could be open for abuse. It really annoyed me that this person didn't see fit to talk to me first.

8. Write a letter to the management denying the violation.

any direct confrontation at this point will escalate the matter with these chickenshit neighbors of yours.

now they have something on record and you don't, so you don't have a pot to piss in, from the management's perspective.

9. our downstairs neighbors used to complain about our noise

it was very annoying. At first they were quite polite, and asked nicely if I would turn my music down. I complied, even though I thought my music was at a pretty reasonable volume. Then they began asking us all the time to turn it down.

We live in an apartment.

Sometimes you'll hear your neighbors.

For whatever reason, sound travels easily through the floors here, and they would come and ask us to turn the TV down even when the level was easily reasonable--I couldn't hear it in the other room, for instance.

Then one day we got a pleasantly worded card from our management company, explaining that with the colder weather people would be spending more time indoors, and please remember to be considerate with your noise level. We assumed they complained. :eyes:

The way we handled it: I bought wireless headphones and we now use those to watch TV. I had wanted the wireless headphones for a while anyway, so it seemed like a good excuse. Of course, when we have company we don't use the headphones, and so occasionally they will pound on the ceiling. I respond by stomping on the floor.

I know this doesn't really help with your situation, though ... I would keep trying to talk to them, to see if you could establish some mutually-agreeable ground rules for noise, etc.

10. DON'T approach them

and if they continue to harass you get a lawyer

did you talk to the landlord and explain that there was no noise? if you've got a weirdo imagining things, you are going to need to protect yourself but approaching the weirdo will do more harm than good

if you are playing the music too loud knock it off, if you can't tell if you're playing the music too loud get your hearing checked

but don't approach someone who is already your declared enemy, why get a stalking charge on top of it?
