An urban myth comes true right before my eyes
So I'm at the supermarket, and SO goes up to the service desk to buy cigarattes.

There's a woman in front of him with a Bouvier, and the dog is wearing one of those little "service dog" vests.

When the woman with the Bouvier leaves the store, we get in the checkout line, and the girl behind the counter starts laughing hysterically. The manager says "what happened?" The girls says "that woman just said 'SIT!, and I didn't know what to do! I thought she was talking to me! I didn't see the dog!!"

SO saw the whole thing, and just about fell over himself laughing.

11. Yeah - same myth, only this lacked the racist angle
thankfully.

The cashier's face was BRIGHT red, and she was laughing so hard tears were coming out of her eyes!

This is NOT a small breed.

7. So
that's what they look like. I read Stephen White's books and the main character has one. Sounds like a big, amusing dog.

8. Big, amusing (to some), stubborn
with a mind of their own and willing to let you know it. That picture is my Dotty (Echo's Automagic Valiant). My older Bouv, Rosie, left us in March.

Have had this breed for 30 years and love them dearly.

10. Didn't know they were used as service dogs
I talked to the lady about him for a few minutes - she was on a cane, and looked as if she had MS or some other neurological difficulty.

It was so cute - he was only 5 months and already growing out of the little vest that said "Service Dog in Training - Ask before you pet me", which had clearly been designed for smaller breeds!

13. Oh yes, they make wonderful service dogs
Strong enough to pull a wheelchair if it came to that, bright enough to know when you need help and give it, stubborn enough not to listen to you if they think you don't what's good for you.

The dog we lost in March was in training for therapy work when she was young. As part of it, we were teaching her ASL (American sign language) so that we could use her to teach deaf kids how to deal with dogs. Rosie quickly figured out with the sign that if she didn't SEE what we were telling her, she didn't have to obey. So if she didn't like what I was saying, she'd just turn her back on me and refuse to look. And one of the breeders had a bitch who got tired of the show ring so she pretended to be blind. (Yep, actually pretended to be blind)

They can be a handful.

9. It was a 5 month old puppy, but still huge
But it was standing RIGHT in front of the counter, and the girl behind the counter couldn't see it.

Gorgeous dog!
