1. A few...
Lés Miserables--I've seen it 3 times. I think the only way I can see them is live though. Most movie musicals seem a bit contrived--I liked Oklahoma, but when I saw the Eddie Albert movie version, it was insipid. I did like Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, when I saw them long ago.

Followed by Into the Woods.

On a side note, how do you do the accent mark over the "e"?

But ... get some veal, heat it up, call it a meal and give it your name. Like Prince Pückler did. Just because he served frozen strawberries. Or Lord Sandwich, the inventor of the sliced bread on the top and bottom of ingredients. Heck, even get Marie Antoinette, the cake ...

13. What's Into the Woods?
Try to find the 3-CD set of Les Mis. It's got the full versions of the songs, and all the intermittent orchestral stuff. A couple of the songs on the 2-CD version are truncated.

I saw it 3 times in London. But never with Frances Ruffelle as Eponine  Damn that woman's voice soars.

Edited on Fri May-12-06 10:41 PM by CBHagman
I think I understand what you mean about the misogyny, but I've come to view Gigi as The Anti-Pretty Woman. That is, the most dehumanizing thing is to be made into something you're not, to be formed for another person's use. To be something other than what you are is to risk self-destruction, or at least a very cold heart.

As it happens, the novella was written by a woman (Colette).

109. Have you got my number or what?
 Classic movies strike again!

I do like to tell people that when I was a kid, the raciest things on TV were Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Gigi. The latter I really didn't understand, and the former I understood all too well.

My culturally literate parents exposed me to a lot of rather adult material through opera and little theater, to say nothing of their collection of Broadway cast albums.

The strange thing about kids is that they can become hooked on musicals through albums, without actually seeing them on stage or in film. I know that was true in my case, and it still seems to be true for some kids.

However, thanks to DVDs and videos and PBS, you have more options than ever for watching musicals.

110. ya know, I never thought about the Broadway album thing...
but my parents too, had a lot of broadway albums, and movie-soundtrack albums, that they played, waaayyyyy before I ever saw any of the movies! But you're right again, CBH! I guess that's where I first started loving the musical genre of films too--

70. The Muppets Take Manhattan (or possibly Hedwig and the Angry Inch)
Edited on Fri May-12-06 08:36 PM by Monkey see Monkey Do

Look at me, here I am
Right where I belong
I see that face coming back to me
Like an old familiar song.
What better place could anyone be?
Cause you're here with me!
It's all I've been looking for
And so much more!
And now I'm here
Now you're here!
Nothing can go wrong, Cause I am here right where I belong!

I put on some make-up
and turn up the eight-track
I'm pulling the wig down from the shelf
Suddenly I'm Miss Farrah Fawcett
from TV
until I wake up
and turn back to myself

74. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.......
Go Babs, with your bad Liberal self!

Also, most of Rogers and Hammerstein. I don't think they get credit for the risks they took--dealing with racism (South Pacific) and setting a whole story in a Minority community in the 1950s (Flower Drum Song). And the tunes!

77. I've always liked "The Sound of Music"...
... I wouldn't call it my favorite (I've only seen about 15 musicals in my life) but I thought I'd just speak up for it since I know how so many people HATE it, absolutely HATE it.

And I'm a straight male too. I've always enjoyed it though.

Edited on Sat May-13-06 07:46 AM by Rhiannon12866
My cousin and I knew all the songs, still do. And my parents once took us to see it performed live. Van Johnson was Professor Harold Hill, and I still remember him marching up and down the aisles in this red satin uniform, waving his baton...:bounce:

On edit: And we loved the movie, thought Shirley Jones was so beautiful, still do.:-)
