I think I'll go with the vintage wooden fruit.

1. A Sports Illustrated Curse Magazine
Printed in October 1986, during the American League playoffs. Shows Angels Doug DeCinces and Bobby Grich jumping in unison at home plate to share a joyful high five. It bears Bobby's autograph - he was my favorite player when I was a kid.

5. The Legend of the Sports Illustrated Curse
If a particular team or a favorite player or athlete is featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated during the playoffs, just before March Madness, at the beginning of a huge golf tourney, during the run-up to the Olympics, etc., that team or individual will CHOKE.

The 1986 Angels led the Boston Red Sox 3-1. In game 5 in Anaheim, they were one OUT away from the World Series when Dave Henderson of the Red Sox homered and put the Sox ahead. The Halos lost that game, sending the playoffs back to Boston, where Boston won the next two.

The Angels were on the cover of SI before that fateful game 5.

The Sports Illustrated curse.

11. Good story for this thread.
Very appropriate. Maybe we should publish a curse magazine for the GOP for the 2006 election?

27. Steam baskets are round baskets that are stacked on top
of each other and placed on top of boiling water. They are used to steam food in some Asian countries. They sell them at some kitchen stores.

22. Vintage grapes and lots of vintage wooden trays.
A very, very old nut cracker bowl. It is exactly like the one we had when I was a kid. I got it to show my dad because I have strong memories of him cracking nuts with it, but he didn't remember it right away.

7. Old, Heavy (Lead) Christmas Tree Icicles...
... the ones made from strips of crinkle-cut leaded foil. They are metal, heavy... and they hang beautifully. Not at all like the lightweight mylar icicles that are made today.

Nobody manufactures the heavy foil icicles anymore because they contain lead... which is poisonous. Apparently children (and pets) were eating them.

Our tree is always decorated with traditional and nostalgic lights and ornaments... so those icicles are perfect finishing touch.

9. Wow, same here!
Edited on Thu May-11-06 03:40 PM by djeseru
I found all my cool vintage Christmas tree decorations on eBay - tin light reflectors, the crinkle foil garlands and icicles. I was lucky to have inherited several boxes of 1940's/1950's shiny brights, so now I go all-out vintage during the holidays!

I can't stand the icicles today - such tiny strings that just cling to everything enough to make them pointless.

Edit for crappy grammar...

What was the liquid used in those old Christmas lights that would bubble up? Do you know which ones I'm talking about?

I have an original set, which doesn't work, but I wouldn't have a clue what the liquid is. Maybe just water with some food coloring?

29. Yep... I've Got About Two Dozen Of Those.
They always bring back fond memories of my childhood... I always marveled at them... wondering where the bubbles came from, and where they went. (Even today, I still don't fully understand how it works.)
