10. I'm allergic to cats - that's not the sad part
I'm also a bleeding heart. So, when a VERY pregnant stray came to our door I made a place for her on our sun porch (so she couldn't come into the house). Friday night she had 5 beautiful kittens (I actually helped her have two of them - she was so exhausted). They are a treasure. My husband goes outside w/her so she can go to the bathroom (she doesn't like the litter box too much but has used it). We can't wait to take them to the vet to find them homes and have her spayed.

This morning my husband called to me while I was getting ready for work. He was holding a kitten and told me that a car had struck a cat, carrying one of her kittens across the street, and killed her. Thing was, it wasn't OUR cat or kitten. The kitten had blood on it's nose and mouth but looked okay (eyes still closed and meowing for mom) we put it in w/our mom-cat and she cleaned the kitten off. We found the cat in the middle of the road almost dead - that's right ALMOST DEAD - as we walked toward her some ass drove by and ran over her back legs. (I'm just sick even thinking about it). My husband picked her up and put her on a towel and set her in our wheelbarrow. We placed her under a tree for some shade, I assume she'll be dead by the time we come home tonight. (Blood out her nose and mouth and filling into her eyes - rattly breath and not moving).

So...where are the other kittens?

I'm so sad! We CAN'T take care of the cats we already have but we can't leave the kittens to die (that is if we can FIND them or else they WILL die).

Why did this happen? I thought we had done a good deed by taking in a making plans for the one cat and her kittens - so we get this? A dying mom-cat and one kitten knowing that there are others that will die w/out her.

Explain that Karma!!??

15. Oh Debi...I'm crying after reading that. I'm so sorry.
There is good in that because you and your husband were there. And stray momma cat seems to want to take care of the other baby...but I cannot explain the other momma cat getting hit. People are jerks. He was probably not even paying attention. Maybe when you get home the kittens will be wandering. I will hope for the best.

and...You DID do a good deed.

17. My husband says that by the time we get home the other kittens will
be crying loud for mom and we should be able to locate them (I hope, I hope, I hope). They don't even have their eyes open yet. I don't know if our mom-cat will be willing to take in that many kittens for one night. Maybe the vet will have an idea.

I also hope the other cat IS dead by the time we get home or I'll feel like crap knowing I made her suffer all day.

All we can do is hope for the best.

Thanks

46. Debi - I am so sorry... You might pick up some KMR before
you head home. Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR) will let you feed the 'extra kitties' if you can locate them. You can buy it at PetSmart, many other pet stores and vet offices. Your momma kitty might be willing to clean them and let them all bond with her, but she'll need help with feeding everyone.

I would suggest also that you google for local animal rescues in your area and/or call your local humane society to ask for names/phones of animal rescues and explain what is happening. They might at least offer to come look and let you know what you need to do -- even better they might be willing to take the litter of kitties off your hands. Bottle feeding kitties has to happen pretty frequently around the clock.

Do what you can do - and - Thank you.

48. Oh dear...
I'm sorry, but you shouldn't have let the injured cat suffer like that. Couldn't you take it to the vet, even if just to put it to sleep? Animals hit by cars can suffer for days before dying.

I'd quickly paper the neighborhood with flyers asking that if anyone hears kittens crying to call immediately.

49. There is no neighborhood - we live in the country
with only one other house across the street. (we're talking 14 acres between the two of us)

We'll be visiting the neighbors tonight to see if they can help us locate the kittens.

I just typed a long rant about the cat hit by the car being left and then erased it realizing that any excuses or explanations I make won't make the cat's dismal last moments any better - I did the best that I could with what I had. If I've failed then I've failed. (obviously, if she is still alive when we come home tonight we'll do something about it, but I doubt she'll still be alive she was pretty far gone when we picked her up off the road after being hit by two cars).

Now I have to think about her kittens and what I can do for them.

No other color yet but, day lilies are starting to bud and irises are coming up.

I have some Prince William in a whiskey barrel that should be blooming by this weekend. That will be pretty

Lilacs, apple & cherry blossoms are some of my favorites. They're so fragrant and lovely, and at the same time feel like benchmarks that spring is really in full swing.

42. It is hard when it comes to being a caring person.
I have bottle fed more than one litter of kittens. But we do it and we may cry some, and it may hurt. But in the end we know we tried and that we made a difference for them. Just remember you may have given Momma the only amount of love she ever had on earth. Just by giving her a soft, cool place to lay as she passes on. Chin up, I have had my moments where an animal touched me very deeply. I mean Sam my cutting horse I trained made me cry, just because he kept looking at his saddle and the barn door. That was the last time I saw him. He had not seen me for a year after I got hurt, and he remembered me and wanted to go ride. He shied away from me when I first came into his stall, and then I whistled like I would for him and he came toward me. He stiffed my hand and then came up and put his head in my chest. And did his little knickered he did when he wanted his ears scratched. I scratched him and he started looking for his piece of bread. I always gave him a piece of white bread and then an apple. I cried so hard that night having to say goodbye. I am choking up now just remembering it. So we all have our moments.

43. Oh, Tex, I'm sorry.
It has to be hard for you, and you keep such a positive attitude.

So, tell me, if I find the rest of the kittens - how do I bottle feed and with what? The mom-cat we have at our house has her five plus the one from the accident (if he's still alive)and I don't know that she can (or will) take any more.

PLEASE tell me what to do!! :bounce:

Thanks for caring - and for making me feel a little better today.

d.

44. Talk to your vet, and he can give you formula for them.
He may also have someone who can take them for you. Your vet should be able to give you what you need for nursing them. I know PetsMart carries the bottles.

But they will need to be fed about every four hours.

Your Momma cat may not be able to support that many kittens at one time. You can try but supplement what she does with bottle feeding.

The Momma may be able to help your raise them, by doing the things Momma's do, like helping them learn to go potty and things like that. If she doesn't you will need to use a warm wash cloth and wash their back areas to help them go.

To bottle feed them wrap them in a soft hand towel and then lay them back and they will do the rest. If you don't wrap them in a towel be prepared for scratches.
