Why is it to some people more important
how someone writes/types than what they write/type.

1. It makes them feel better about themselves.
However, I'll make a comment if something is totally unintelligible. Further, context is important. If you make a typo here, no big deal. But if you're talking about real world, professional documents, how someone writes makes ALL the difference in the world.

5. Oh I don't pay them any attention
as I know my grammar ain't correct as I have the excuse to not speaking English as mother language :)

But they are hurting other people by it and I think it is stupid to go for typing as we all make mistakes even with the check speller.

7. I'm a grammar nazi, but I can't help it.
It's second nature to me. I am a copy editor and I correct grammar, spelling and punctuation all day. So when I see some of the blatant mistakes made by some posters here, I just have to correct them. However, most of the time I restrain myself.

6. Cause they like to nitpick instead of thinking.

If it isn't laid out plain and simple for them ~ then they have to use their brain to figure out precisely what's being said.

18. That's not really fair
I'll admit to being something of a grammar nazi, though I usually bite my cyber-tongue and don't say anything here. But for me, poor grammar and spelling are like fingernails on a blackboard. It has nothing to do with my feeling superior or not wanting to use my brain. For me, words come easily. I'm a word person - some people are number people or computer people, two things that confuse the hell right out of me and my misuse of those terms probably drives those people crazy as well.

It's hard for me to fathom why people can't see that "Where are you at?" is an incorrect phrasing. Or the difference between "lose" and "loose." It's just because those things are so simple to me that it's hard for me to see them as difficult for others. I realize it's so but sometimes can't help trying to educate. Not out of any sense of superiority but in an effort to help them express themselves more clearly.

An effort that I realize no one wants which is why I try to keep my mouth shut.

20. If you're writing a book, resume or anything that is formal, yes I agree.

Every bit of proper spelling, use of grammar and punctuation is very important.

At times we are replying from an emotional spot. Words straight from the gut can fall off fingertips carelessly through the tears.

BTW ~ I've never noticed any nazi tendencies in your post.

8. I want to offer you two ways to respond to such people.
The first is verbal and I learned from the gracious progmom:

Bite me.

The second is related and has a visual component:

Use these in good health! :loveya:

15. Not 'more important', but is IS important, nonetheless.
After all, we have generally agreed-upon rules and standards for written communication for a reason; ignoring them leads to lack of clarity, confusion and misunderstanding (the meaning of a sentence can be completely altered by a single misplaced punctuation mark, for instance).

It doesn't matter QUITE so much in an informal setting, but even then reading something that's full of misspellings and misused punctuation can be rather difficult.

21. Because I'm not a mind-reader.
I can usually figure out the odd grammatical or spelling error, but there have been times when I had no idea what a phrase meant because of irregular usage. Internet abbreviations are particularly confusing. You can stuff this in whatever pigeon hole you like (conceit, arrogance etc.) but we have standard language for a reason and that reason is to understand each other.

22. I confess
While I don't post grammatical corrections to other people's posts, I make a note of them in my head all the time.

And while I fully admit that I may not always construct a sentence in the proper manner, I try very hard to make sure that my "your" and "you're" and "their," "there," and "they're" are always appropriate.

Some things bug me. Not enough to make a stink about it, but bug me nonetheless.

To be honest, whenever I see someone make those kind of mistakes, and I know that they have a high school diploma (or even a college diploma), I wonder..... how?
