And some here are gonna hate for this, but too bad.
We had some amazing Thai-style spring rolls, followed with a magnificent pan-seared 80g of foie gras and mango chutney, then a caesar salad, and then a most wonderful pepper-caked rib-eye of Australian Black Angus. Had a fantastic Chilian wine (thankfully, today is a rainy day, and the restaurant offers half-price bottles on rainy days of anything more than 5,000 Yen) with dinner as well. Finished it up with coffee and a Chocolate Mousse that was easily the best chocolate mousse I've ever had, served with a small scoop of decadent chocolate sorbet and a wheel of carmelized sugar, and also a scoop of amaretto ice cream, served in a whisky glass, over which was poured a small pitcher of espresso at the table.
FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!
Then after dinner, we actually got a tour of the place - used to be an old Kyoto-style Ryokan, very much like the place in
Spirited Away, with the second oldest elevator in Kyoto - an old Otis manual one! Beautiful building, great dinner, and a perfectly relaxing evening, sitting eating a slow and excellent dinner while looking out upon a rainy Kamogawa river and the mountains.
We had hoped to eat on the yuka (the deck over the river) but the rain made that impossible.
Here's the place:
http://www.theriveroriental.com/So, on this trip I've had whale and foie gras. All I need is some veal to round out the trifecta of illiberal foods. :-) Am I awful? Maybe a bit, but what the hell. I haven't had foie gras in years, and I was desperate for some. And it was heavenly!
