Pink baseball bats...??
Great cause, but I just can't see ballplayers doing this.

On Mother's Day, Major League Baseball players will wear pink wristbands and the pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness will be displayed on player uniforms, as well as on all on-field personnel. Additionally, Louisville Slugger, the Official Bat Supplier of Major League Baseball, has produced pink bats stamped with the Major League Baseball breast cancer logo and will be available to all players to use Mother's Day weekend. The pink ribbon logo also will appear on the bases and on commemorative home plates. In addition, dugout lineup cards will be pink. Team-autographed commemorative home plates, pink bats and lineup cards from each ballpark will be auctioned off at a later date to raise additional funds for the Komen Foundation.

1. I have some mixed feelings about this, OR.
I can see your point regarding major leaguer's using pink bats, but on the other hand, my mother is a breast cancer survivor, so anything and everything that can contribute to the cause of breast cancer research is fine by me.

2. Don't misunderstand me
I think it's a wonderful thing to do. I just can't see baseball players — as a group, the most homophobic people I've ever known — getting very excited about swinging pink bats in public.

4. No, I understand what you were saying
That's why I said I had mixed feelings -- I agree that a lot of the players may feel uncomfortable about it, but I'll bet anything that they might be getting kudo's from wives, moms, and sis's for doing it.

5. Meanwhile, in the clubhouses
there'll be all kinds of kidding, practical jokes and whatnot. And not all of it will be fun, I'll wager.

But — too damned bad, guys.

6. That's right, OR
Damn the pink bats and full speed ahead. If taking one day to use a pink bat can help in the research for a cure, I say go for it!

7. Check the M's site, too
Every club's gonna have pink stuff for sale, with part of the proceeds going to the Komen Foundation.

I may get me a pink Dodgers cap.

9. Even if they don't make it onto the field, SG
I'd be willing to bet that a Ton of 'em are going to end up autographed and then auctioned off for research.

NHLers bring pink to rink to fight cancer
WebPosted Thu, 16 Mar 2006 15:03:07 EST
CBC Sports

Several NHL stars will be wielding pink hockey sticks over the weekend to honour hockey moms and raise money for breast cancer research.

The initiative is being spearheaded by hockey gear manufacturer TPS Hockey, a subsidiary of Hillerich and Bradsby of Canada Ltd. in Wallaceburg, Ont.

Brad Janson, TPS's director of professional hockey, told the Chatham Daily News the idea came in the wake of the cancer-related deaths of Phyllis Gretzky and the sister of TPS owner Paul Walker.

Rick Nash, Sidney Crosby, Mats Sundin and Steve Yzerman are among those expected to participate in games held Friday through Sunday.

26. I can't see anyone doing it cause ballplayers are bat-shit crazy lunatics.
They are way to superstitious, very particular about their gear.

I think the hockey players are more likely to use pink hockey sticks for a day than baseball players are to use different bats for a day, regardless of color.

I think it would be funny though is some guy does use a pink bat and goes 5 for 5 on mother's day, you know he'll bring that pink lumber back out on the the next game. Fucking loons.

3. I heard about this earlier tonight
But the guy who was telling me about it mumbles like you wouldn't believe and barely speaks above a whisper, so I just caught bits and pieces...

It's a great cause and all, but replace a gamer it with a pink one? I don't think we'll see many of 'em, except in the dugouts.

I have noticed players already wearing the wristbands, though. Either yesterday or the day before...can't remember who, though.

10. My dear Oeditpus Rex......
I think this is a good idea....

BUT.....

I would much rather see the money go into prevention!

No-one ever talks about that part of it.....

You remember the old saying....An ounce of prevention...OK, you do!

But it never comes up in conversation....Why do you suppose that is?

:hi:

15. What exactly can be done to prevent breast cancer?
Just curious...I know early detection is the key, but actual prevention is difficult, no?

17. Research and more research, Kitchey
I just saw a report on our local news about a new procedure that can detect inflammatory breast cancer very early on, thus increasing the chance for survival. Here's a link to the story.

20. My dear KitchenWitch!
Well, that's a very good question....

I think research should be done on the role of chemicals in our environment......

Hormones, pesticides, food additives....like that....

It has been awhile since I've done any thinking on this.....

And just where have you been tonight? Are you OK? I'll just bet you've been sleeping, huh?

So GOOD to see you! :loveya:

24. That is what I thought - I mean, the research thing
Which I believe is the point of the pink bats.

What corks me, and it is a personal thing, is that almost as many folks get leukemia or lymphoma (I am a lymphoma survivor), and I rarely hear of big fund drives for leukemia/lymphoma research.

21. It's a cool thing to have, anyway
Last time I was attached to a cap, it was a pink one. I forget what was on it — wasn't a baseball cap — but I wore it so much the cloth on the bill got worn.

And I had a pink shirt I wore so much one of the elbows wore through and the other was turnin' white.

I like pink.

Besides — chicks'll think I'm a feminist and sensitive and liberal and stuff.

I wore that pink cap all the time — chicks or no chicks.

And it got beat-up and dirty, which is decidedly not a chick magnet.

So take back your spankin'.

Wait... what am I saying?? :banghead:
