Grammarians ... What Do You Think Of This?
Edited on Sun May-07-06 01:50 PM by arwalden
I recently heard a radio commercial for a local LASIK eye surgeon. In the ad, the announcer ends with: "Call today and schedule a consultation with the metro area's most experienced surgeon. After all it's your eyes."

HUH? -- "It's your eyes??"

"It" suggests a single eye. I suppose "it" could be referring to a single PAIR of eyes, but that's not what the ad says. Should "pair of" be understood?

Even if "pair of" is what they meant... it still sounds awkward... and STUPID!

I would have written the copy to read "...after all, they're your eyes".

~Allen

Thank you for listening. It's been bugging me for the past month that idiotic commercial has been running. I just had to vent.

Sorry just wanted to post that picture again. However, I agree with you; it should be "they're."

8. It *could* mean the same as
"Your eyes are the issue." It's slangy. But since there's confusion about it, it's a poor choice.

9. Subject/ object disagreement. Sloppy grammar. Sloppy thinking?
You never know what's behind sloppy grammar or where it'll lead, does one?

10. Well... It Certainly Leads Me To Their Competition.
If they're sloppy about the ad (which is supposed to present them in the BEST possible light) then how careful will they be with someone's eyes.

After all... it are my pair of eye.

11. "It's your eyes" is correct.
Edited on Sun May-07-06 04:39 PM by AtomicKitten
"your eyes" is a collective noun requiring a singular verb in this sentence.

I have a bumper sticker that reads "Ignorance and arrogance is bad foreign policy."

On the other hand, the singular noun "scissors" requires a plural verb.

12. 'It's your vision" would probably be correct.
Not "It's your eyes".
