Who are the most polar opposite musicians/bands in your CD collection?
I'm sure DUers have varied musical collections, but I was curious as to what two artists in your collection are the biggest polar opposites?

Personally, I listen to everything, but I think the fact that I have both Hank Williams and the Wu-Tang Clan in my collection is a great example.

There are more examples of vastly different artists in my collection, but that's probably the best I can think of.

What about you guys?

53. Doris Day!!
She was a great singer in her day. I just wish she had sung better songs. However, "My Secret Love" is a fave of mine, and she sings the HECK out of that song. Listen to the way she hits the word 'now' after the break. It gives me chills.

38. Oh man.....where do I start....

I listen to many different genres. I guess the most opposite would be like NWA and James Taylor, or maybe Ella Fitzgerald and Namie Amuro, or how about Roger Miller and Devanand Gatoo....or M.I.A and The Platters.

I have a little over 10,000 songs of many different genres.

41. Depends on what you're into

I'm guessing the ones that you don't recognize are Devand Gatoo, Namie Amuro, and maybe M.I.A.

Devand Gatoo is chutney music, which is a mix of reggae, soca, and indian music...very popular in Trinidad and East India. It's definitely not for everybody.

Namie Amuro is just a Japanese pop star. However, when her album came out I was in Okinawa that year (1996), and she was all the rage, because she was from Oki, too. There are some good catchy J-Pop tunes on there, but again not for everybody. It's one of things like where you had to be there, in Okinawa at the time, to appreciate it. Plus she was super-hot, and I had an adulthood crush on her.

You might have heard of M.I.A....and if you haven't you should check her out. Progmom here on DU hipped me to her. I can't really categorize M.I.A. You just have to hear her....you'll either immediately like her or you'll hate her....there's no middle ground really. If you're interested go here:
http://www.mp3.com/m.i.a./artists/628272/songs.html
and listen to the samples of Galang and Bucky Done Gun. If you like those samples, you'll like the hole album. If not, you probably won't like it.

Actually, Hildegard isn't the "artist"--she was a 10th century German abbess & mystic who wrote exquisite music that makes Gregorian chant seem a bit crude. Surely everybody knows The Cramps?

Fit these in...

"Satan is Real" by the Louvin Brothers

"Tango: Zero Hour" by Astor Piazzola

"The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders"

"Lachrimae" by John Dowland

"Whistler, Chaucer, Detroit & Greenhill"

"The Parable of Arable Land" by the Red Krayola

"The Messiah" performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields

AC/DC vs. the Baka Forest People.

The Baka are a tribe of pygmie nomads who live in the rainforest (Cameroon) area of Africa. They are highly skilled musicians though their main instruments are primitive, such as their voices and water "drums."
