LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A former Walt Disney World dancer who used to dress up as Cinderella and Snow White was named Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Year on Thursday.

Kara Monaco, 23, an aspiring actress from Lakeland, Florida, received a check for $100,000, a car and a sports motorbike from Playboy Enterprises Inc., company founder Hugh Hefner announced at the Playboy Mansion.

Monaco, a blonde, hopes to leverage her new role to boost her modeling and acting career.

In the olden days, a few Playmates were rejected as PMOY since they were too shy in person. After all, they do have to make TV appearances and such. They have to have enough personality or smarts to be interviewed on camera.

(Anna Nicole was an aberration, of course, but her stunning looks simply outshone any other candidates that year, so TPTB chose to overlook her less-than-stunning mind)

A Playmate friend told me that Hef himself couldn't keep them straight, starting in the late 1990's. In the 60's, 70's, 80's, they each had a distinct look, with a mixture of blondes, brunettes, redheads, and (somewhat) varying body types.

The sad truth is, the vast, VAST majority of Playmates discover that:

- modeling agencies don't want them. "Playmate of the Month" is a deal-killer on a resume, not an enhancement.

- the only acting roles will be in Andy Sedaris films or as "Hooker #2" in low-budget films that go straight to Cinemax.

I count many Playmates among my friends, and *they* tell me this is true. But the newbie Playmates still buy Playboy's line of "Look at Pam Anderson. Look at Jenny McCarthy (yeah, right). Look at Anna Nicole Smith" Do the math. 3 or 4 out of 300.

It's just like the college basketball players who think "Just wait until I get into the NBA, then I got it made"--yet only 2% of them get in.

Too bad. Many of these women could have had legitimate modeling careers--instead of two years of posing and appearing for Playboy, then nada after that.

I didn't mean to imply they stopped working or stopped trying. I was referring to the "I just can't wait until I get into the NBA, then I'll make millions" mindset--yet only 2% achieve that goal. A similar percentage of Playmates will achieve success (even modest success) as models or actresses. The rest will not.

Yet both groups are convinced that they will be in the 2%.

Not saying anything about hope or motivation, but rather about ignoring the reality that 98% of each group won't make it. And the deception of TPTB that tell them otherwise.
