I just watched Eraserhead, ask me anything.
'cause I don't think I want to go to sleep for a good while yet...

1. Did you understand the movie?
If so, please explain it to me.

8. In heaven, everything is fine. Some of it seemed sort of obvious.
A lot of it just seemed to play on the subconscious. The whole bit of meeting the in-laws, the giant sperm, the "move over". I'm a tad freaked by it all, still, I didn't know movies could be like that.

2. Saw that many years ago, about '78, and it completely weirded me out.
I still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about it. Damn, but that was a seriously strange movie.

9. No, not really. I liked the soundtrack, and the movie seemed to
at least make dream sense to me. I didn't really know a lot about it beforehand, but I'd seen some of his other movies (Blue Velvet, Straight Story) and sort of had some ideas as to what it might mean. The scenes with the "baby" were difficult.

16. It is like a dream.
If you are prone to troubling dreams while on certain medications, like codiene, it's like that. But, when it is all done, you are left with these troubling images and nothing behind them. That is, there is no message or question or debate with which to consider the images, to sort them or to draw conclusions from them. No real path to putting the images into some sort of context or draw lessons from them. The images and your reactions just hang around in your brain for years afterward, fucking with you.

I see no point to the movie, other than an exercise in personal excess on the part of Lynch. That has become his style.

JMO.

22. IMO Lynch has always been about "style" way over "substance"
He won't let little things like "story" or "plot" interfere with his vision. It doesn't bother him to spend money on a film consisting of an almost random string of vaguely disquieting images and off the wall cinematic techniques for the sole purpose of achieving some unique aesthetic as long as that aesthetic pleases him and if only him then so be it.

See his film "Lost Highway" and the interview included in the special features DVD for some confirmation of this.

18. I'm glad I'm not the only one deeply disturbed by it.
I was afraid I had gone insane, because I could not believe that anyone else on earth could be so insane as to make, hell, even think up, what I was seeing, I therefore concluded that what I was seeing could not be real (a real work of fiction.)
