Well, I'm officially heartbroken.
I don't want to talk about details right now, maybe later. I'd just like some hugs and support.

83. It's not you, It's her.
You could have been the perfect boyfriend and she still would have messed around on you. Don't blame yourself for something she did. You will just drive yourself batshit crazy nitpicking the past.

And getting mad at the guy isn't worth it because if he never existed then she would have just chosen someone else to cheat with. Yes, you will find that special person eventually, but unfortunately most of us have to kiss a few toads first. :D

Yeah it sucks, but in time it will get better. If you haven't seen the movie Swingers, then I would highly recommend it.

22. Well, I was recently frustrated, though not heartbroken
I know it sucks. Unfortunately for me, I don't get sad, I get kinda angry at myself, and I can tell you that's even worse. So, if you want my unsolicited advice, save your emotions for the situation and don't blame yourself. That doesn't make things better.

Besides, if she doesn't want you, that just means she's not good enough, right?

34. No... no... no...
Firstly, let me say I've been misled by my fair share of girls. I try to treat them as learning experiences, but unfortunately each new girl has managed to decieve me in some new way I wasn't really prepared for. Example: just because a girl goes out with you doesn't mean she doesn't have a boyfriend. That's happened to me a couple of times. It makes me mad, and evidently you too, but in the end we cannont be held responsible for other people's lies. I hate to say these experiences have made me more cynical, but they have.

I believe that the fault lies with social convention that keeps people operating on a metaphorical and euphamistic level. Instead of getting girls to go out for "coffee" all the time (which is I guess what we kids these days are supposed to do) we should be able to say to each other, "I like you. Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend and if not would you consider going on a date with me". Unfortunately, saying that makes you look like an overeager clod, so we're stuck in the gray zone.

Don't blame yourself. It's society that's messed up. Well, this particular aspect of society anyway.

38. It's not like that, though.
This time, since we'd (emphasis on the past, as far as I'm concerned, our association is past over) known each other for eight years plus, we were comfortable enough to take our friendship to the next level without such awkwardness. Or so it seemed, because last night I find out she's been messing around with, get this, her ex-boyfriend from a year ago, who she repeatedly told me she hated now. Whoops, guess not.

Once again, I'm just a fling. Only this time, I got deluded into thinking it wasn't. Stupid me, I never change.

43. I've thought about doing that, too.
And I know I could. :grr: But it won't help anything and will probably land my ass in a load of hot water.

It just kills me that she'd rather got back to the guy who hurt her more than once than be with the guy who's been there for her since she was 11 years old.

Now I can't help but wonder how much of that friendship was even real.

Hugs, prayers, white light..... whatever is needful.

When you do feel like talking about it.... do. It's silly to think that people you don't know and never will know caring could make a difference. But it does. It really does.

So when you feel the time is right.... talk to us. It matters. OK?

There's no one I can really talk to about this. My parents would ask far too many awkward questions and just make things worse, and you just can't talk to college guys about things like this.

73. Oh man................
From upthread: "t just kills me that she'd rather got back to the guy who hurt her more than once than be with the guy who's been there for her since she was 11 years old.

Now I can't help but wonder how much of that friendship was even real."

Yes the friendship was most likely very real. But from what you've said she seems too immature to appreciate a guy like you. If she should get back with this boyfriend, let her. As hard as it is you've got to move on. NEVER look back. She may take with the guy, she may have more wild oats to sew. Who knows? The point is whatever she does has no affect on YOU being a great person. It wouldn't suprise me in the least to have her come back to you after she's been dumped by the other guy with several kids of his to care for. Let's just leave it at that.

76. For eight years, I learned to trust her.
We never once let each other down, I helped get back on her feet when this douchebag burned her and she rebounded on another guy I know who also screwed her over. She let me talk about anything, even the touchy relationship stuff most guys are afraid to ask, and assured me there wasn't anyone else and that she didn't have "flings."

And if that was a lie, what else was, too? Looking back, I realize I've always been a tool to be thrown away when they're done with me. I'm half about ready to give up caring about other people and be one of those jackasses who gets his way in the world by being shady. it sure would make my life a fuckload easier.

89. Take it from Dr. bwa
the friendship, the touchy feely stuff was very real. It's just that one thing I've learned is that if you want to be romatically involved with a woman, you CANNOT be her shrink. It's great to do that. But the minute you do she subconsciously links her problems with you. The other guy hasn't had to deal with this stuff. She equates pleasure with the other guy.

I've been this "Friend" with so many women I've lost track. It's my natural tendency to do this, to let the woman cry on my shoulder. But I've got to fight it.

95. It all starts with you.
When you really and truly love YOU more than anything or anyone in the world you'll attract the women you want. Those who want you to listen will be friends, nothing more. Those who are healed from their misfortunes will be the ones for you.

I'm almost 50 and just learning this.

92. I disagree to some extent.
I mature woman is going to want to open up every aspect of herself to the man she loves- her problems at times, but she's still going to want him when it comes to physical pleasures as well. I don't think it has to be an either/or thing there.

However, with a woman who doesn't know herself yet, that may be another story. She may not yet be able to see a lover and a best friend as one person. If she has enough problems that she truly needs to work them over with a professional, she needs to do that as well.

Probably not as mature as I thought I was. Back then I didn't know there actually were decent men my age, so I hooked up with an "older guy" (wasn't a great move, but I'll spare the long, gory details). I wish I had better advice because I know how much this stuff hurts. All I can say is that I'm sorry, things will get better (I know it doesn't feel like it though), and you will understand yourself more from the experience.

Big hugs, sweetie.

97. Yeah I see your point.
It's just that initially in the relationship you need to keep it about you and her, not her bad relationships prior to you. A woman doesn't want to hear about all the bad relationships a guy has had. She doesn't want to hear him bitching about his ex.

To deal with all the baggage too soon would be like the guy telling her that he loves her on the second date. It needs to be about them, not their past. Dealing with everything else will come out in due time.

Nothing wrong with being that shoulder for her. That's the problem with relationships. One person wants to be friends, the other wants something more. But again, that's no reflection on YOU. She was just the wrong person for you.

82. bummer. I hate broken hearts . . .
HOW CAN YOIU MEND A BROKEN HEART

I can think of younger days, when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
But I was never told about the sorrows, and

How can you mend the broken hearts
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend this broken man
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
Da, da, da, da, da

I can still feel the breeze, that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow
No one said a word about the sorrow, and

How can you mend the broken hearts,
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining,
What makes the world go round?
And how can you mend this broken man,
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da

Please help me mend my broken heart
And let me live again
Da, da, da, da, da
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.

Ok that doesn't help much, but it is currently working for me.

Of course what do I know, I spent two years not dating ANYBODY at all because I could no longer deal with the dating / mating roller coaster. Then I put up an ad, got a response from a guy I was really hipped on, and then he went POOF (I felt like shit) so I put up another ad and got like a zillion responses and now I feel MUCH better and have like four dates lined up for next week.

You need to cultivate a sense of abundance, you know. The fact is that the world is big and there are a TON of nice girls out there. And you just have to relax and meet them and be open to the possibilities.

No more judging, no more, "Well she's nice BUT--- " just end the sentence with "She's nice" and then see where to go from there....

LOL, I am giving you the advice I am giving myself right now so I don't know if it will really work for you but hey, just be in the moment. Zen and the Art of Dating.:hug::hug::hug:
