Don't laugh. Roger Ebert calls her performance "one of the best in the history of cinema" - and he's seen most of that history. Halle Berry got "ugly" for Monster's Ball last year - and we all know how that turned out.

1. she..
doesn't look nearly as ugly as I was expecting, based on all of the hype. Her hair still looks too good and she just looks like a tired, 10 years older Charlize with no makeup. If that's Hollywood's version of an ugly woman, I think a lot of women are going to be offended.

4. The real Aileen Wuornos was one of the ugliest women on the planet!
Of course she's not on the planet anymore.... I love when they get beautiful women to ugly up for a role...sometimes it works sometimes it don't!

7. Well, I see your point, but what she did wasn't really acting--it was
grimacing and pouting, a very thin, very bad performance.

But hey, it was her nose and that's all that mattered, especially most people who vote for the Oscars don't actually see any of the movies they're voting for!!!!!!!!!!!!

11. Well, she moved me;
and I connected so deeply with each of the three women on some level -- and with Ed Harris's character, too.

(I didn't get Steve Martin's comment about her nose during the Oscar show until I saw the film on DVD, and watched an interview w/ the actresses.)

5. heard that too

But...her physical appearance in "Monster" and the behavior in clips I've seen remind me very painfully of a psycho semi-suicidal/quasi-homicidal former roommate, a French Canadian woman. (Thankfully, that woman medicated up a lot on Prozac and lithium and gave up on trying to slither her way into my real social life.) And I've always hated Theron in interviews- she always strikes me as painfully calculating. I suspect this is her attempt to match up to CZarina Jones's "Chicago" ploy/Oscar hard sell.

The more I watch the current batch the more I respect Liz Taylor.

6. I saw an ad yesterday on top of a taxi cab in NY and I was like
whoa. Yeah, this has a very Hillary Swank/Boys Don't Cry aura about it.

I was figuring Kate Blanchet for the double wammy Veronica Guerin and the Missing, but she could very well cancel herself out.

9. I don't think Kate will win--Veronica Guerin was a bomb, and The Missing
is clearly going to be a box-office "diappointment."

Too bad they just don't base it on acting.
