Popularity contest demean the contributions of others. Not only that but if one is nominated even though they didn't ask to be, they draw the wrath of others to the point of being accused of being in some "clique" even though they did nothing to deserve the accusation except post and participate on DU so it's a lose/lose game.

Maybe in a few years you will lose your shyness and your politics may be the one that resonates with voters. I used to be shy, but overcame it. A little trick that someone taught me was to think of everyone you are afraid to speak up to as being in their underwear, or with zits on their face or other awkward things. It helps you to overcome the shyness.
