Unsung film performances
This subject brought to you by my viewing and reviewing last night of Laura Dern in Citizen Ruth.

I can't believe such total submergence into the character of the glue sniffing homeless pregnant woman at the center of an abortion rights/right-to-life war in Omaha won her only one award (and only one nomination!).

(The film is also overlooked. Maybe people are leery of a fairly fearless satire on the subject of abortion?)

1. She was a great huffer, agreed. So charmingly addled and hopeless.

2. I was listening to her commentary on the film
and it was a pleasure to find out she enjoys watching the performance herself. It's like she watching someone else. You can tell she loves Ruth Stoops.

4. I can't not mention Joseph Gordon-Levitt in last year's "Mysterious Skin"

Insanely strong performance. Simply stunning and I urge everybody to rent it.

Laura Dern is pretty underrated all round. I'm especially fond of her in Lynch's Blue Velvet & Wild at Heart.

7. Philip Seymour Hoffman in Boogie Nights.
I guess he's not that unsung anymore, but his tragically unloved, sexually repressed character in Boogie Nights was the best of the film, IMHO.

9. Melinda Dillon as Suzanne Hanrahan in Slapshot
Her unflinching performance exploring bisexuality and loneliness within marriage. Brings a tear to my eye every time.

17. He did it again for Werner Herzog in "Rescue Dawn"
(though not by quite as much) which should hopefully come out this year.

Agree completely about "The Machinist", although it's really painful to watch at times.

18. I'm looking forward to that one too. ;-)
It's being held up at the production level-- the production company hasn't paid anyone yet, apparently. :(

Bale reportedly lost about 40-50 pounds this time around. I hope he quits doing that before he does permanent damage to himself.
