I made a mistake on my cover letter!
Edited on Sat Dec-06-03 01:45 PM by jiacinto
I just cost myself the job I really wanted. I wrote 170 as the address instead of 1710. I corrected it before I sent it with a pen at the shipping office. But it was too late. I am not now going to get the dream job. It pays $41K and it means everything to me.

I am so distraught. Will this eliminate me from consideration?

1. No, you penciled it in, so you'll be okay

2. Not necessarily.
There are so many variables that go into any hiring decision that I would ask you to please let this go.

P.S. I hope you get the job.

4. Ok I will do that
I just heard this story:

Employer X gets 500 applications.

Envelopes with the misspelled address immediately thrown out.

300 applications

Mispelled cover letters immediately trhown out

100 applications

Mispelled resumes immediately thrown out

50 applications

error free applications

10 applications

And those ten people got interviews!

7. So the logical thing to do
is resend your resume with the correct address since according to your hypothesis your first one is in the trash. Good Luck.

3. Apparently not.
You've already declared that you are now going to get the dream job.

Oops.

It may or it may not. I suppose it depends on how anal the person reading the letter is and whether or not you played up your "attention to details" skills.

In any event, don't be so distraught. There's nothing to be done about it now. Next time you'll proofread better.

9. The powers of positive thinking
should not be so summarily dismissed.

11. Relax Carlos...

I'm sure you also include your phone number and email ddress... and it's much more likely that they will use one of those methods to reach you than a letter... I wouldn't sweat it. This is just the first step in a process.. they won't be mailing you anything (at least anything you want to receive) for a while. The only thing that gets mailed at this stage of the game is a "thanks, but no thanks" letter.

It's highly unlikely that anyone will even notice your mistake, except for the penciled in correction... even then, you also included your resume, right ? That has your proper address, and is the document they are most likely to refer to when corresponding with you. It also lists your mad skillz and special abilites... and thats what's going to get you the job.

Just the same, why not approach your neighbors and inform them that you *might* get some mis-addressed mail ?

Take a deep breath, and stay positive - you're not out of the running yet.

13. Ok
But you misunderstood. I wrote the company's address wrong on the cover letter.

16. Oh... even so...
They really won't notice that !! You got the right addy on the envelope, so it will go where it needs to go... when they read the letter, which they will give all of 30 seconds if you are lucky, do you really think they are going to bother reading their address ??

Mountain, meet molehill.

You're fine, dude.

That is the least important place to make a typo - as long as the body reads fine, and your "elevator pitch" is good, they wont care about the typo.

12. If you saw the error
in advance, why did you still send it? Wouldn't it have made more sense to go back and correct it properly and then send it?

15. There was a deadline
I had to send it via overnight mail or it wouldn't meet the deadline. And the post office was about to close.

17. Why did you wait until the last minute?
Those types of mistakes are always bound to happen. Next time I would suggest you finish in advance, set it aside for a couple of hours and then review it with fresh eyes.
