So, I think I'm gonna learn Farsi
As a career move.

Anyone speak it? Or ever tried to learn?
Is it hard?
What is hard about it?

1. Hey -- come on out to Los Angeles. You can get a job in Westwood...
there are thousands of Persians in the area and Persian owned businesses. You could practice Farsi like you never dreamed possible! Plus, Persian food pretty much kicks ass!!

I have thought about trying to learn it, too...might be nice if I ever need work. I hear that the CIA and FBI are always hiring!

3. Why Farsi in particular?
I would have thought that in your neck of the woods Urdu or Hindi or Punjabi would have been more useful. I've looked into studying Farsi - the grammar doesn't look too out of control, I think the initial difficulty would be learning to read the script. It reads right to left and each character is written somewhat differently depending on whether it falls at the beginning, middle, or end of a word. Oh, and if memory serves Farsi doesn't have much in the way of written vowels. Good luck! :-)

12. Well, I was thinking cantonese at first
But I would like to do some reporting from the middle east at some point, so figured farsi would be a good one.

10. I speak it fluently
My Parents took in an exchange student from Tehran when they had their uprising. He taught me the language slowly. His parents were released along with his sister a few years later and they became citizens. I learned more from his Mom and Dad, as I tried to teach them English!

It's a fascinating language, the only issues I have ( and still do ) is pronunciation of some words, they are spelled the same but mean very different things with different pronunciation!

Good luck, I think you will find it fascinating!
