... my Better Homes & Gardens cookbook doesn't have any goat meat recipes in it. I suppose I could substitute one of the beef recipies... but my local Safeway doesn't sell goat. At least I don't think they do, you never see specials for goat meat being advertised.

44. Maybe specialty shops..or directly from the farm
I've heard people around here say they've had it..but you're correct, it's not something I've seen even in places that carry buffalo or ostrich.

I googled it and was surpised that " Goat meat, or Chevon, is one of the most widely consumed meats in the world". Maybe we don't know what we are missing..

Some recipes are there as well.

... and they eat just about ANYTHING! I think they'll even eat POISON IVY. I guess they are low maintenance and don't require a lot of expensive feed... so they would do well in more extreme climates where natural food sources for the goats are scarce (or poor quality).

Tongue is more like a very tender veal. I admit it tastes great, but it is not remarkably different from veal.

The chances of you going through your whole life and not eating anything with gellatin (such as Jello but not limited to such) and it not containing SOME horse hooves in there are remote.

You may not have eaten a horse steak, but you've eaten horse.

Edited on Sun Apr-02-06 05:17 PM by Kali
Cattle, pig, lamb, deer, antelope, elk, bear, turkey, chicken, quail, trout, salmon, catfish, various marine species of fish - not sure of them all, crabs, shrimps, lobster and crayfish. Edit to add: various molusks as well.

Of the terrestrial vertebrates cattle, pig, chicken and turkey are the favorites by far. Love seafood but it's not real affordable for me.

13. Sea urchin, frog, snail, buffalo and grubs.
I was watching the Travel Channel the other day and it featured an Englishman sampling the more exotic foods of SE Asia. The most exotic was a big, knobby fruit that smells like s**t (it smells so bad that many businesses and restaurants won't allow it inside). The Englishman sampled it and said it tasted like soft, rotten onions. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the fruit.

Does anyone know its name?

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to eat scallops without extras.

Carabba's, for example fixes an awesome dish called Spiedino di Mare-shrimp and scallops, baked, breaded, and drizzled in a sort of butter sauce. One of the best things I've ever had at a chain restaurant.

I don't eat a ton of meat, but I do have steak/chicken/occasional ham. I've never had lamb, though. Fatty meat really grosses me out - I always take the leanest, most well-done piece on the table.

I have also never had crab, lobster, squid, shrimp, scallops, clams, fish, or anything of that nature. They just give me the willies. My grandpa, who served in the Navy, also told me to never eat anything that came out of the ocean. Evidently, he saw some dumping out there. :)

35. I think it would be easier saying what kind I HAVE eaten
Beef, pork, chicken, turkey and about three times, duck. Other than those, I haven't eaten anything else. I have eaten most fish at one time or another.

It was easy for me to become a vegetarian, but when I became diabetic, my doctors told me I needed more protein again, so I came back to turkey and chicken. I eat pork and beef very, very rarely at all. I think I've had beef about five times in the past year. And pork is usually limited to bacon or sausage when I eat out for breakfast.

40. I Really Dislike Deer Meat. I Think. --- Should I Try It Again?
The first time I ever tried venison, it was because someone was trying to trick me into eating it. They told me that I was eating beef stew, but it was actually VENISON stew.

Well, they did NOT fool me... when I had my first bite of meat, it tasted nothing at ALL like beef. I assumed it was rancid beef and I spit it out right away.

Does venison really taste "bad" or did I dislike it right away ONLY because I was expecting something familiar, but got something else instead? Would I have liked it better if I had been told what it was?

70. Did I ever tell you about when my dad went hunting?
He brought back a deer and hung it upside down in our basement to bleed. I was about five and had just finished reading Bambi, and I just happened to go down into the basement...

I absolutely refused to eat Bambi. Everyone was mad at me; we were poor and couldn't afford to refuse food, but I was adamant.

72. Oh, my...no, you didn't tell me that story.
All of those events would have certainly kept me off deer meat. A 5-year old shouldn't have to see "Bambi" and then experience the brutality of hunting right after. That's awful.

73. I eat hot dogs, so I've probably eaten most kinds of meat
but I have never intentionally eaten horsemeat, snake, muskrats and other varmints, insects, dog, cat, rabbit (Bugs!), duck(Daffy!), goose (Mother Goose) or bear(in the Big Blue House).

I have eaten venison(Bambi).

At least I hope not. My mom fed us SPAM and scrapple, when we were young.
