5. Is this sleep apnea? Have it analyzed by a doctor or sleep clinic.
There was no treatment which my husband could tolerate. We had his throat reconfigured by surgery years ago. Didn't work. We had the CPAP machine for a couple of months -- he hated it. When we share a bed in a hotel, I take medication to sleep and keep a disk player with a headset on all night -- along with an eyeshade.

At home, we keep totally different schedules, too -- I'm up early AM and he's up past midnight.

I moved to a separate bedroom years ago. Americans are the only people who think you have to sleep in the same bed together for your total marital time together. Read about other cultures and other long term marriages. Separate rooms are the way to sanity, trust me.

We enjoy getting together for "activities" and TV watching, and I make his bed and my bed up each morning. Otherwise, snoring is terrible for the snorer and the snoree, or whatever the hell you are, Mrs. Grumpy! No wonder you're grumpy. Get some help immediately, if not sooner.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

7. He already did the sleep clinic. He didn't buy the machine, because
while he was sleeping in the clinic it kept coming detached. Usually his snoring doesn't bother me, it's gotten worse of late. I would like for him to go back and see if removal of his adenoids would help. He isn't heavy, hasn't gained a bunch of weight, so I've got no idea. You are probably right about the separate rooms, but I love snuggling with him...when he isn't snoring. Thanks so much Radio_Lady. :)

13. Sleep Apnea Isn't About Weight, Age, Sex
I was told I couldn't have sleep apnea because I was "too young, too thin and too female." Well, by the time I finally found a competent doctor, I was blacking out randomly and had an 02 sat of 69% (which is very, very bad). I was in my late 20s. Without a CPAP, it is very unlikely that I would have made it to my 30s.

If he had a diagnosis of sleep apnea, it is extremely important that it be treated, otherwise he is facing the very real possibility of death from heart attack or stroke, or permanent disability from stroke (not to mention irreparairable damage to the short term memory). Removing the adenoids does not treat sleep apnea, nor does tonsillectomy, nor does UPPP (it has a 75% failure rate, which counts to me as "does not treat sleep apnea"). There are two treatments so far that work: xPAP or tracheostomy.

Most insurance will cover the cost (or most of the cost) of an xPAP under Durable Medical Equipment.

19. If you look above, he's done this route already. This is not new
to us. We're pretty well versed. I appreciate the concern, but his doctor(ENT) is quite sure that removal of his adenoids and tonsils will clear up the problem. :hi:

But his airway still might be at least partially closing even after this surgery.

33. agree
just started on cpap myself. the machine (or more precisely, the mask) is a pain in the ass, but compared to dialysis or some other LIFESAVING technology it ain't that bad. Only three days and I am noticing big differences.

when you see those scores from a sleep study it hits home - holy crap I haven't been asleep in YEARS, even though I "sleep" all the time!

I couldn't do the nose mask but I have been very successful with the nasal pillows variety. You barely feel them and there is nothing covering anything on your face. I wouldn't use it otherwise.

31. UPDATE: Here's the plan, MrsGrumpy.
TRY OUT SEPARATE BEDROOMS! Lots of people decide when to cuddle and snuggle periodically in long marriages. I go in to jump in his bed several mornings a week, because he quiets down in the morning.

And get a bite guard from a dentist for yourself and your son. They are wonderful. We don't have teeth that replace themselves -- once is not enough.

In peace,

Radio_Lady

Seek other means to stop the snoring -- how about stuffing their noses with small cucumbers, like gherkins (unpickled, of course). ::sarcasm::

OR TRY SEPARATE ROOMS!

27. My ex was a snorer
I often found that if I rolled over and put my arms around him, it toned it down quite a bit. He used to travel frequently in his job and he and his partner shared a room. One day, his partner was complaining about the snoring and I told him, "Just put your arms around him and hold him close - he'll quiet right down."

The look on his face was priceless. O8)

42. LOL! Another joke about husbands and beds --
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 02:08 AM by Radio_Lady
My best lady friend was expecting a call from her husband, who was in some Far East location on business.

When my husband called her unexpectedly early one Saturday morning, she answered the telephone -- without looking at the Caller ID. Then she exclaimed, "Hello, sweetheart -- I missed holding you last night!"

My hubby laughed and advised her that she wasn't talking to the right husband -- but he was happy for the thought!

PS. I encourage my friend and my husband to go out to dinner alone together. They both like Indian food and her hubby and I can't stand it. They've gone a couple of times.

I moved into the guestroom to sleep several years ago. Probably saved my marriage! LOL
I remember one night when we were traveling hubby was snoring soooo LOUD that the people next door were banging on the wall and telling him to keep it down. Of course, hubby never heard a thing but I was wide awake the whole night.

37. Here's a feature from a few years ago on BEDDING TOGETHER!
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 12:49 AM by Radio_Lady
http://marriage.about.com/b/a/099173.htm

Bedding Down Together

Why do people share a bed with their spouse if they would sleep more soundly if they didn't? Here are some solutions to differences in sleeping preferences.

N: "I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with preferring to sleep alone, and no one should feel there should be some sort of medical reason before this preference is acceptable."

K: "Intimacy to me means a deep sharing of all parts of myself. It means sharing parts of myself with my husband and he with me that set us apart and make us "as one." Sharing a bed is part of that."

X: "My husband and I have ideas for a dream house. It would include separate bedrooms or just personal areas. We are both individuals who at times need to be alone or to have personal sanctuaries."

N: "To me it's erotically intimate to be invited to share someone's personal space. I truly don't see how it's more intimate or better intimacy to "become one." I said earlier I believe allowing a partner separate sleeping space is loving and respectful. I don't see that it's more loving and respectful--or intimate--to believe that "your space is mine."

R: "Sounds great! There are definitely times when I wished we had separate bedrooms or at least separate beds. I guess you can have sleepovers when you are feeling so inclined, or even a third bedroom specifically for rendezvous :) You do what is most comfortable and convenient for yourselves, it doesn't really matter what other people think of your situation."

RU: "Occasionally I still get out of bed if I can't sleep, and I go sleep on the couch in the living room. There are some nights when I really wish I could be alone. But the rest of the time -- wow, there is really nothing like that feeling of being able to reach out for him in a sleepy state and feel his arms around me. I believe some of our most intimate moments are in bed (and I'm not talking about sex - just being physcially with him, lying together)."
