What music are you listening to this weekend?
Mostly samples of stuff so far for me. 7digital.com has samples from the upcoming Pink and Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums. I was impressed with both. Much of the Pink is rocky like the last album. The single "Stupid Girls" has fine lyrics, but a sound that seems shopworn. Luckily, there's the great power pop of "Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)," the gorgeous protest song "Dear Mr. President" (featuring Indigo Girls,) and creative R&B and rock/R&B. The CD sounds like a winner! The Yeah Yeah Yeahs album shows that they found out what a melody is. Fans that like super hard-core punk won't like it as much, but it made me eat crow about them being overrated critical darlings that I'd never buy from. Add 2 more CDs to my to-get list!

I heard a song from Sara Paxton called "Here We Go Again," and I'm not sure she's anything special. Actress turned singer Brie Larson is great IMO, but Sara might be different - it didn't work for Hilary Duff or Jennifer Love Hewitt. Mixed results for Lindsay Lohan.

I heard The Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice" - tremendous country/rock ballad! No standard country/pop production here. Now I'm even more anxious for the CD to come out. They wrote it with Dan Wilson, who has a lot of good songs of his own with Semisonic.

Also heard Decemberists - Picaresque

I have The Sounds' Dying to Say This To You and Sonya Kitchell's Words Came Back To Me on order. Got My Morning Jacket's Z for a great price at Target today, and will listen to it tonight.

The song playing on the site is vaguely Celtic. I listen to all kinds of stuff and am open to suggestions.

5. It is Celtic. The kicker is that it's from Spain
From the northern province of Galicia. They speak a language half-way between Castillian and Portuguese.

Susana Seivane and Carlos Nuñez are my favorite pipers from Galicia. Carlos has played with the Chieftains.

I'm planning on getting in touch with my negative side. Plus I spend too much time being mainstream.

6. Got Brian Lee on in the car
He's a New Orleans Blues Rock type for those who aren't familiar with him. Thinking about some Frankie Marino and Mahogany Rush at this moment. Boy am I old! It's doubtful that young people know who Frank Marino is. Oh well. Heck, maybe even some Green Day later. "American Idiot". Long live Rock.

I've been listening to everything the past few days: Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Beastie Boys, Link Wray, Patton Oswalt, Marc Maron (both comedians), Modern Jazz Quartet and the Allman Brothers. Right now, I'm listening to Run-DMC.

14. What I've heard from the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album...
Edited on Sun Mar-26-06 03:58 AM by Spider Jerusalem
can best be described as sounding sort of like the White Stripes with Siouxsie Sioux on vocals. Not at all bad, and what I've heard sounds better than most of the other current rock out there.

At the moment I'm listening to a Swedish electronica duo called The Knife...name of the album is "Silent Shout". It's becoming one of my favourite recent albums. It's got a dark, creepy vibe going on, especially on the opening track (which sounds kind of like Kraftwerk in hell on bad drugs...but in a good way).

24. I'll listen to the full album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Edited on Sun Mar-26-06 12:16 PM by mvd
on the full album listening party before buying - just to make sure my impression is right. I thought Fever To Tell is a mess. But maybe it is that White Stripes influence that's making me like Show Your Bones a lot more. What I heard is competitive with the other stuff I've bought this year.

22. This weekend is a jazzer.
Got Masterpieces by Ellington on now--15:26 of "Mood Indigo" and 11:28 of "Sophisticated Lady" are unbeatable. Gonna listen to Kind of Blue later. And yesterday, of course, was progmom's kick-ass radio show!

that I loved My Morning Jacket's Z - it's one of those CDs that gets more rewarding with each listen.

And for those who want to hear the beautiful new Dixie Chicks song, it plays automatically when you enter their site:
