"A giant tortoise, believed to be the oldest in the world, has died at the Calcutta Zoo in India. It was thought to be around 250 years old.

Zoo officials say the aldabra tortoise died of live failure. The reptile had been the pet of Robert Clive, a famous British military officer in colonial India around the middle of the 18th century.

Local authorities say the tortoise, named "Addwaitya" meaning the "The One and Only" was the oldest tortoise in the world but they have not presented scientific proof to back up their claim."

He would have been 20 years old when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
