What do you use for bookmarks?
I use old lotto tickets and or the sales recite for the books. I save the lotto tickets with jackpots over 100 million. It is always a treat to see how much I paid for the book or what the jackpot was back in XXXX when I reread the book.

2. Oddly enough, mine are usually receipts or old lottery tickets also.
And I don't buy lottery tickets that often.

Generally, though, I will use any piece of paper lying around. I don't ever use "real" bookmarks, even though I have a few.

4. A leather one I "made" one when I was in the hospital
we did leather-stamping when I was doing occupational therapy when I was in the psych ward last spring. Mine has a bunch of seaguls and moons stamped on it. It actually has a lot of sentimental value, as it was from the lowest point in my life.

When I saw this: Mine has a bunch of seaguls and moons stamped on it , I thought it said "...and morons stamped on it."

8. Um...bookmarks.
Boring, huh? I use lots of different bookmarks, but they all have one thing in common: they were all made specifically as bookmarks. I have bookmarks that I got free when ordering books on-line. I've got a few of those cutesy $100,000 bill bookmarks that Borders sells. I occasionally use my wife's Star Trek bookmarks; whatever is handy.

13. My most recent bookmark came from Alibris.
I don't know what happened to it.

There's a Target receipt in the book I'm reading now.

16. I love Alibris!
When I discovered their site, I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. It's the best site I'v ever found so far for feeding my habit of buying autographed first editions. Alibris would be first on my list of bookmarked (heh, sorry!) websites even if it didn't have an alphabetical advantage. B-)

I discovered them when I was searching for a not-very-popular out-of-print book from the 70s.

18. Me too!
I was looking for an obscure pulp science-fiction adventure story called "The Texas-Israel War, 1999". Catchy title, huh? I had seen the cover and title of the book only once before, decades ago, but it had always stuck with me. The cover shows an Israeli tank opening fire on Indians on horseback (which doesn't happen in the book, but it draws you in...) I heard of Alibris, and decided to give them a try. They had ONE copy available. I guess it was more obscure than I had thought. I bought it on the spot. I don't read it much, 'cause it's really not that good a story, but it's an interesting thing to have.

What book were you looking for?

19. I was looking for "The Guardian" by Jeffrey Konvitz.
My sister had a copy many years ago, and I read it while in high school. It was actually the sequel to a book called "The Sentinel", which I read later.

I don't remember what prompted me to think about it after 20+ years, but I had a desire to read it again. I wound up buying both books.

9. I rip the top third of the page at the spine and fold it down.
Then I fold the page vertically at about a quarter of the way in from the edge of the leaf. Works every time!

21. Friends know I LOVE postcards. I get them from all over when they travel
My somewhat impressive collection ;) makes for great bookmarks. Every time I move one to read, it is like getting a hug from thoughtful pals who know I love interesting places, but don't like to travel.

23. Library receipts, mostly, or pieces of envelopes.
Then I rip little pieces off the main bookmark to mark a place in the book that I want to go back to - a book or movie reference I want to write down, a concept I want to research further, etc. By the time I finish some books, they look positively "fuzzy" with all the little mini-bookmarks sticking out of the pages.

25. I've gotten some DU bumper stickers that I use as bookmarks.
I don't have a car, and I do have one on my cubicle wall here...

So...

Hey, they make great bookmarks.

28. I like to use real bookmarks.......
My husband uses the little torn bits of paper!

To me, those are way too flimsy....I want something of substance to mark my place......

And also, those substantial bookmarks can be stuck between the cushions of the couch where I sit to read, so they don't get lost while I'm reading!
