My bird pictures (dialup warning)
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 10:32 AM by Call Me Wesley
Newest addition in the curing station my brother in law has since a few days: A male Eurasian eagle owl (bubo bubo). He's an adult and fully grown, however, the females are quite bigger. Beautiful eyes!

1. WOW! Beautiful! One thing I would note though
This bird does not look happy about its situation. In the pictures he looks pretty pissed off.

2. He's a wild bird.
Edited on Tue Mar-21-06 10:29 AM by Call Me Wesley
Being held wasn't the thing he really likes. And they warn you with a pretty loud clicking sound.

But he's soon to be free again, and the state wants to equip him with a GPS device - so you can actually track him down online.

3. Wow! Those are beautiful pictures!
When you say "curing station" are you talking about a bird rescue location?

4. Yes,
it's a state licensed bird rescue station - but only for birds of prey. And it's about a hundred yards from our house. Other inhabitants right now are a hawk and a falcon. The most impressive bird I ever saw up close at my brother in law's rescue station was a golden eagle, though.

7. Ah. Golden Eagles ...
There is a brief statement floating around out there in cyber world: I'll never forget the day I was birding in Cape May, New Jersey. It was during one of my trips to enjoy the hawk migration that I witnessed the most amazing ariel display of two Golden Eagles fighting over a songbird they both wanted for a meal. It was a good day for birdwatching, the thermals were filled with kettles of hawks.

My craniosacral therapist has been working with birds of prey at a local shelter for many years. Her stories of handling these wild creatures were fascinating.

11. I have to look if there are any pictures of the golden eagle.
But yes, since my brother in law came into our lives, I can actually name a few birds yet. ;) And, as a nice side effect, Heidi has quite a large feather collection, including eagle feathers.

25. I'm not sure many people understand just how special her collection is:

http://www.thepeoplespaths.net/govlaw/Eagle-HawkFeathersObtaining.htm

According to federal regulations, only enrolled members of federally recognized tribes can possess eagle feathers. Non-Indians (defined as anyone who does not meet that standard) cannot legally possess eagle feathers even if the feathers were gifted to them or if they found them. Eagle feathers can be gifted to another enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and passed on to children who also meet this requirement. It is highly recommended that a copy of the donor's permit to possess the feathers be obtained for gifted or inherited feathers.

28. This we know.
And of course, all the birds here are protected, so you'd get in big big troubles if you steal feathers. It's different though if you have an eagle from a breeding place, and he had one. These feathers you can keep. I do have a few eagle feathers and some hawk feathers.

6. I've never seen one in the woods.
And this one is not existing in the U. S., only North Africa, Europe, Asia, and Middle East.

Ever since I saw Twin Peaks. ("The owls are not what they seem.")

Sidenote: (Even though I just PMed you about it,) I just got the sketchbook. It's awesome! You and Heidi are the greatest. :)

13. I love
when my friends have the same fetishes I do: nice art supplies, sketchbooks, fountain pens, etc. Early happy birthday, my friend. Ginger says, "Happy birthday, Mr. GoodHair." (If The Wiley and Excellent Boy Cat Named Ginger ever asks for dreads, I'm gonna blame _you_.)

Long enough to have his fur dreaded? I wonder if Knotty Boy makes dread wax for cats. :P

And thanks for the early birthday wishes. :)

Does he have a tendency to eat lasagna and kick dogs off of countertops as well?

22. He's _not_ lazy.
He works very hard on mouse / bird / cricket patrol during his six waking hours.

Ginger wouldn't _touch_ lasagna. He only eats prescription dry cat food and rare roastbeef from the deli. But yeah, if there were a dog sitting in the roastbeef place next to the fridge, Ginger would take that dawg down in nothin' flat. ;)

16. That's not my arm but my brother in law's.
Actually, they won't attack you unless you get your hand in their face, then they bite. But the warning sounds they make, this clicking, assures you not to do it. I was in the cage with a golden eagle sitting right in front of me, and even he eyed every of my motions, he didn't freak out.

17. Gorgeous!
Just a few minutes ago, I looked outside and saw an eagle soaring through the neighborhood. I've never seen them in the city before.

The last time I saw an owl was on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat were always my favorites. :)

Thanks for sharing that beautiful pic, sugar plum. :*

I do see eagles here from time to time, high up in the sky, and it's always fascinating. But my favorite is the 'Red Kite' (milvus milvus) just circling in the bright blue sky:

But it's a male, and the females are even bigger. It's quite an impressive bird to have it close to you. They even hunt small deers ... :hi:

27. It's not quite hard to do
if someone else holds the bird for you. Still, I kept my distance. ;)

He was extremely malnutritioned when he was brought in, which was the main problem. No broken wings or anything, he just hadn't eaten for a long time. Now it's a few days before he'll be released.

Thank you for liking the pictures! :loveya:
