Ahoy there my fellow US Navy sailor people.
Do you remember the phrase?

"I hope to shit in your flat hat"

Did you have a flat hat? Was your ship's name on it?

Did you ever wear it as part of the official uniform (I did not in eight years service).

I wish I had kept mine. Darn it.

Do not let 180 take the helm. Hahahaha

1. I made this for Crazy Guggenheim,
because he once told me this ... But since you mentioned 'helm', you might get a chuckle out of it:

2. Engine telegraph
I think. Nice. Some minesweepers I have known are subject to the 'eat shit and die' speed. They would fall apart from fatigue.

Goodness, oneighty. Can you please explain the phrase? I hope it was not meant literally. :)

11. The phrase
is actually one meaning roughly "I agree with you" Or perhaps "Yes".

For example; "Hey Smitty are you going ashore tonight?" Smitty would say; "I hope to shit in your flat hat." Meaning "Yes you bet I am".

I was hoping for input from other sailors, but it is likely the flat hat was phased out years ago. It did resemble a woman's hat.

14. Good for her
I bet the Navy does not have the Flat Hat any more.

When you say 'Nuke' do you mean she works with the reactors?

Hey China_Cat.

15. Yep, she's on one of the carriers
but don't ask me which one...I can never remember.

With any luck she'll be able to parlay this into a nuclear engineering degree. Navy wanted her badly...only potential recruit in over 30 years that scored 100% on the test.

It was made of wool and looked much like the blue uniform material in color and texture. It resembled a beret. There was a silk ribbon around the area at the bottom of the hat. On the ribbon in gold letters was 'U.S.Navy', or the ships name.It was flat on the top and folded flat to save space. It was really a nice dress hat. As I said I never wore it and never saw it being worn.

Edit: The flat hat was done away with 1 April 1963. I was able to Google up some old pictures. Unit names on the ribbon was ended in 1941.

An interesting history that flat hat.

19. Still worn in the Royal Navy (UK)...
as part of junior enlisted dress blues, as far as I know (which really isn't surprising, since we essentially copied our naval uniforms from the Brits).

So my niece is on a carrier and her husband is on a sub.
