Synonyms for "cool" throughout the generations?
I think in the 40's they called something cool, "the cat's meow."

Can you name some more and what word did you/do you use?

:)

7. 'The cat's meow' dates to the Roaring '20s
Along with "The bee's knees" and "The snake's hips." Guess they were into anthropomorphic oddities then.

"Bitchin'," or "bitchen" if you prefer, is a staple dating to the... '40s, I think. When I was a kid, we used "boss," "cherry," "wicked" and others. Teen years brought a new spate of drug-related euphemisms such as "far out" and "stoney," both of which I beat into the ground.

I feel old all of a sudden. :evilfrown:

15. I remember "bitchen" from 1970 or so
"groovy" was considered seriously dated at that time.

I also remember "far out" from that time too.

9. 'Groovy' was the 60s word
of course. I like "cool," but I'm getting tired of it. Strangely enough, "that's hot" seems to mean the same thing, but it's too associated with Rome Marriott, or whatever her name is. How about "splendid"? I think that's what James Bond says.

10. Gnarly
I never did get that one. Boss. Rad. Those at least made some sense.

But gnarly?

Another one I don't get is 'phat'.

WTF?

I've spent my life trying to avoid phat...no matter how it's spelled (and the 'ph' is just....Wrong).

11. 'Ex'
Short for 'excellent.' Except only girls said 'ex.' Boys said 'excellent.' Cuz that's just how things were.

12. Neat
was my cool... and still works sort of. But I like cool better. I think cool is a jazz thing and will outlast any variations.

But there are variations on cool, such as: kewl, frigid man, ice, iced.

I love slang and how it depicts a particular generation or time period.
