1. Why angry?
You won't regret it. Hang in there. It's hard to give it up but worth it.

2. It will pass.
Do ANYTHING besides lighting-up.
Are you on the patch, pills, being macho and going cold-turkey?
My last cigarette was on March 17 of this year.
You can do it!

7. Day One
I tried earlier in the year and lasted two months. And that was with the patch.

Just really irritable. But not buckling.

I think it helps to have some sort of support.

6. Just remember how much it sucks giving money to tobacco companies.
Who turn around and give campaign contributions to Republicans so Republicans can continue allowing tobacco companies to sell cigarettes.

10. Musta Smoked A Million Of 'Em
I smoked Camels for 35 years, burnin' them babys up at a rate of about 40 a day and got paid to quit.

Local teaching hospital was part of a study of some pill. I signed up, took their pill, had no problem quitting at all, and got paid $500 for taking their palm pilot and completing an electronic survey each night (built in modum and just plug it in to a phone jack) and reporting back I think it was once every 2 weeks for more pills and some quick tests.

Anyway that was almost 5 years ago now and I've never wanted another one, got paid for it too.

11. It gets a little easier everyday
I've been quit now for 2 1/2 years after smoking a pack a day for 25 years. I won't lie, it was the hardest thing I ever did. But now days go by and I don't even think about a cigarette. What really amazed me is how much extra time I have now that I don't have to take smoke breaks.

Keep at it!

12. You can do this. But you may need a substitute activity or two.
Probably not eating. I did needlepoint. Puzzles, cartooning, peppermint candycanes...whatever appeals. Keyboarding might work well, too. :D

Good luck!

13. Be strong! Use your willpower to prevail.
I have never had to quit, so I only know what friends of mine have had to do to quit.

I heard that caffeine use is linked to nicotine urges. You may want to ramp down on the caffeine.

15. good move!
and congrats!

The tobacco companies are some of the worst donors to Repuke party politicians around. In 2002, Philip Morris gave $896,500 to Repukes, and R.J. Reynolds gave $624,750. Think of how much of the money spent on cancer sticks winds up in the coffers of Repuke politicians, and that should be motivation enough to never light up again.

Whenever you get the urge to light up, drink lots of ice water instead. Try exercising to burn off some of the stress that builds up while you are trying to quit. Buy some Altoids and pop one in your mouth instead of smoking.

Me, I'm trying to get off of smokeless tobacco and stay off. It's tough, but that $357,000 that U.S. Tobacco gave to Repuke politicans in 2002 is some pretty strong motivation.

18. Wow!
Thank you all for the words of encouragement.

As today is "Day One" (well, last night was really when I started), I was particularly irritable this morning. All you fine folks have helped me get through the day so far.

Now I don't feel like breaking anything!
