A tribute to my sister Renee:
Today is my sister's 41st birthday. She's my "Irish twin", which means we were both born within a year of each other. For ten days out of each year, we're actually the same age. I always feel a bit melancholy on this day because she lives so far away from me and I haven't seen her in a long time.

Sadly, she was born profoundly retarded and is at a 15 month level, mentally. She cannot speak and does not know me, although she is ambulatory. My parents decided to institutionalize her when she was only 4 years old. I vividly remember my mother sobbing shortly before they placed her, because it was such a painful decision. My mother got married at 19, had me at 20, my retarded sister at 21 and she was pregnant with her third child at the age of 22 when they discovered Renee's retardation, at 8 mos old. At the time of Renee's placement, my poor mother had been carrying her for all of her life, since she couldn't even walk yet. Can you even begin to imagine the emotional stress of that situation?

We were living in PA at the time and my parents found a wonderful place for her to live and she's been there, ever since. Shortly afterwards, my parents' marriage broke up, which is, statistically, very common in situations like these. I lived with my mother and younger sister in OH from the age of 6-12 and during that time, I saw Renee pretty often, when we would go to visit her in the childrens' ward. Those visits remain clear in my memory because of what I saw, at such a young age. I remember seeing severely deformed children, who couldn't even walk. I remember seeing children who wore helmets on their heads because they would bang them on the walls. These were not "normal kids" and I remember so many conflicted emotions during those visits, from fear, to pity, to shame, to confusion, to guilt...Having a sister so profoundly retarded made me feel even more separate from my friends, because I felt nobody could really "get" what it was like.

However, as I've grown, I've come to appreciate the gift of Compassion and the appreciation of differences having a sister like Renee has given me. I love her, unconditionally, and I am so glad she was born....even as I mourn the loss of having any sort of "normal" relationship with her.

I consider myself to be a spiritual person and I have often wondered if, perhaps, she is actually MORE "spiritually enlightened", having chosen to come into this life not being attached to a personality or ego. Who knows? All I know is, she has the purity of a baby, being fully present in every moment with whatever shows up. Who am I to judge her as "less than" anyone else? Who is anyone, to do so? She has value, she has a purpose, she is loved.

So, on her birthday, the Ides of March, I honor my sister Renee and give thanks for the difference she has made in my life and in our family. I love you, Renee. :loveya: Happy birthday, from my heart to yours....

2. Thank you for this, shine.
I also have an "Irish twin." My little sister and I are the same age for 14 days in February and, though we're very, very different women and our lives have taken very different paths, I love her with my whole heart, and miss her terribly. (And yes, everyone else, she's a Republican. So, sue us both.) No one can make me giggle like my little sister.

 Shine. :loveya:, gf. You have a beautiful soul.

7. Thank you so much for this
My aunt (my only aunt, actually) Ginger is also profoundly retarded and lives in an institution near here. She was institutionalized at age four. We see her a few times a year. She's my mom's sister, but she seems to love my dad best of all. She loves to go for rides and she loves McDonald's french fries. I think the myriad psychiatrists, doctors, social workers, et al, have never given her enough credit because she is non-verbal too.

Plus she's like my mom and me - stubborn as all get-out. She won't participate in activities and prefers more solitary pursuits. I've always thought that she had a hell of a lot more going for her than a lot of these people who send us reams and reams of paperwork on her, to be honest. Blah, blah, blah, she won't play with the other people in her group... well, you know what? Doctors said she wouldn't live to see her fifth birthday, then her 12th, then her 20th, now she just turned 58 and she's still here, still tough.

Thanks so much for posting this, it really means a lot to me and it touched me deeply.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RENEE! You have an awesome sister! :loveya:

9. Happy birthday Sis!
regarding spiritual enlightenment - attachment is one of the greatest obstacles on the path of enlightenment. I would think that your sister would be very far along on this path.

To see your past lives, look at your current situation.
To see your future lives, look at your current actions.

Your sister is safe and sound... and loved. This is a sign of good past karma, and good future karma.

How very loving...
I like to think that although people like your sister and my son may never have an "ordinary" life, or families of their own, they produce a generational legacy by imbuing those of us around them with a bit more compassion and humanity, which in turn, we pass on to our (other) children and family, and they to theirs, and so on.

Happy birthday, Renee!

43. Oh, my dear Shine.....what a beautiful post this is.....
For you to acknowledge your difficult early years when you were grappling with your feelings towards your sister, and the other children in that ward.....

That takes real courage! It takes real love as well.....

To be able to see past the physical problems to the purity of the soul inside.....

What a gift.......

Your sister has been blessed by your love!

As you have been by her presence in your life! She has helped you see what truly matters.....

The physical shell, while important indeed, is just that: a shell....

It carries the soul, which I believe to be immortal, and to be connected to all souls.....

Happy Birthday, Renee....and here's to many more!

Here's an interesting story: on my very first date with my hubby, over 14 yrs ago, we discovered that we BOTH had a sibling born profoundly retarded. !! Pretty amazing, huh? Believe me, you don't run across people like that everyday. Sadly, his brother (who was a twin, actually) had passed away many years previously, so I never got to meet him, unfortunately, but just the fact that my husband and I had that in common was truly an incredible connection and coincidence. What were the chances of that?

In any case, you're absolutely right, my sister has indeed helped to me to see what truly matters...and for that, I am grateful.

53. This is to my brother Aaron.
Aaron is 18 months younger than me. He began seizuring at the age of 15 months which altered his normal development and he is also profoundly mentally retarded. He hasn't lived at home since he was 9 (now 32). He functions at about the level of a 2 year old, but without speech. He can walk and when I see him, I still feel a connection between us that I can't explain. When I was younger, I was so sure I wouldn't have healthy children myself. I did though- not only healthy, but gifted.

Now, many of the children I work with have delays. I couldn't have done it until I was a mother myself, but it brings so much to me to come full circle here.

Both evolved spiritual beings...both gifted with love and compassion and wonder and appreciation.

Happy 41st Birthday, Renee. :bounce: :toast: :bounce: You are, as your sister is, an extraordinary woman.

(My ex had two mentally challenged sisters. It ran in his family. One sister was able to live on her own with a lot of help, the other was in a home tailored for her and others who had similar challenges. He recalls similar events...even some as sad as parents dropping off kids and never coming back to see them; basically, disowning them. I became me much more aware of the challenges, as well as beauty, of those with developmental disabilites. He had two remarkable sisters)

I am, in SO many ways, very similar to how you describe Renee. But for a small wonky gentic something-or-other, I'm permitted to live in *normal* society (although I've never, ever felt like *other people*) and she's shuttered away. Very weird, how this whole humanity thing works.

Lovely post, Shine. I'd like to give Renee a big birthday squeeze. :)

64. I have worked with people like renee as a teacher. They are a joy.
Their happiness is unending. As long as someone can look after their basic needs, they are capable of living happy lives.

Happy Birthday, Renee!
