LONDON (AFP) - British male drivers waste nearly six million hours a year lost on the road because they are reluctant to ask for directions.

Men who are lost wait an average of 20 minutes before giving up and asking for directions, while women only wait 10 minutes before seeking help, according to a survey from Royal Automobile Club Direct Insurance.

Men even endure a "nagging period" of around 10 minutes from their partner before throwing in the towel and stopping to ask the way, the poll showed.

Based on responses from 2,000 adults, the survey also revealed:

--Some 64 percent of couples admitted to having arguments over getting lost on the road.

-- Only 27 percent of couples plan their journeys before setting off.

-- Just 36 percent of couples rely on landmarks and road signs to find their destination

-- One in four couples still scribble down basic directions on a bit of scrap paper.

Because I LOVE maps... all kinds maps... I can never have enough directions, side-trips, detours and alternatives...

I read atlases for enjoyment.

3. When I was there

I asked them for directions to somewhere I wanted to go. They practically escorted me there. They kept walking with me after they told me the directions asking if I was sure I understood.

They waste time giving directions too :rofl:

I stop and ask. Fortunately I do know how to use a map for areas outside my home base and thanks to the internet directions should be as easy as point click and print.

I have a fear of being lost because I just can't stand it....I will stop as soon as I figure out I am hopelessly lost.....and people always seem to love giving directions, they never mind a person asking

I never ask directions. But I also have a turn-by-turn course description.

This is one man who isn't afraid to ask for directions if something is unclear, or I'm (repeat after me, men) *LOST*.

Then again, it's just me - I don't have a nagging spouse to brow-beat me into submission, I have to do it all myself, so why waste the time.

11. My husband was once supposed to meet me and a

couple of friends at a restaurant just off the freeway. I gave him directions and told him that when he exited, the restaurant would be directly across the street. You can't miss it. Well he missed it and rather than ask someone he drove up and down the street a bunch of times, gave up, and went home - 40 minutes away. When I asked him why he didn't just ask somebody, his flimsy excuse was "nobody around there speaks English." This in North Hollywood, CA! To this day he'd rather drive around lost than ask for directions.

the answer I get is "I don't live in this town."
