Any Baristas here that can answer a coffee question
What is the difference between espresso and regular coffee beans?

1. They're both the same beans
In this country, what's called an "espresso" roast or blend tends to be very darkly roasted, since it has to stand up in flavor to all the milk/sweeteners we use here. But Lavazza, a major coffee co in Italy has some very mildly roasted espresso blends that taste -brilliant- just black. Wouldn't do to use them in a basic drip machine, however.

3. it's the same bean
espresso is ground finer, exposing more surface area of the interior of the bean. More surface area = more flavor = more caffeine = more coffee goodness.

4. I think it's the grind...
more than the beans.

I'm sure there will now be 10000 posts telling me I'm
an idiot which I'll then refute with a quick trip to
Google. Which will then be refuted by a Wiki link.

But, I think it's the fineness of the grind.

14. Oh, yeah... and preparation is different.
It requires some pressure behind the water... More so than drip.

6. espresso is more a technique than a bean BUT
normally espresso is made from Arabica beans rather than Robusta. and the difference there is the elevation which the plants are grown (mostly)

Arabica is the more highly desired bean, robusta more the drek found in cans

and espresso blend can be roasted either lightly or darkly but it's mostly the technique of forcing the water through the grinds at high pressure and quick enough not to pull out the nasty oils that leave a bitter taste

confused? ask away. funny that I am writing an article on this very subject currently.
