900 ft. Jesus and The Colbert Report: I Called It
Earlier this year, Stephen Colbert engaged in a war of words with the Associated Press over an article which declared "truthiness" the word of the year but failed to give credit to Mr. Colbert for coining the term.

Stephen Colbert may expect credit when credit is due, but when it comes to stealing material, it seems that Mr. Colbert gives as well as he takes. (Untangle that metaphor at your leisure.)

On Monday's Colbert Report, the first since the NCAA tournament brackets were announced, everyone's favorite satirical talkshow blowhard unveiled his surprise pick for NCAA champion: Oral Roberts University. ORU would be great, Colbert theorized, if they had the 900 foot Jesus (which the university's namesake once saw in a vision) playing on their team.

Of course, what Mr. Colbert doesn't want you to know is that this particular ringer wasn't his idea. You won't find him crediting anyone else with the brainstorm, but the time stamp here at DU makes it clear that I CALLED IT. I suggested that 900 foot Jesus would be just the secret weapon ORU needed to dominate the field.

Check the time: 28 hours before Colbert went on the air with his "bold" prediction and "insightful" analysis. Clearly Stephen Colbert reads the Democratic Underground, and even relies on it for advice in handicapping the tournament field.

Now, there's nothing wrong with reading DU or taking the advice of the wise posters here, and I don't expect an apology from Mr. Colbert. But in the interest of truthiness, it would be nice if he would set the record straight.

2. Not to take credit -it was an obvious joke
but about 3 years ago I posted a photo of the big bomb (what was the name of it?) that they tested in Florida right before the IRaq invasion. I posted the yahoo caption and whited out the parts to make it seem like WE had invaded Florida.

THAT NIGHT the Daily Show did almost the same joke. There have been other examples and several from other posters but some of them were pretty obvious.

The 900 foot JEsus is very funny.

4. I think you should take credit for it
I'll give you credit for it anyway. If you really don't want it, you can donate it to the charitable organization of your choice. :)

I don't remember the situation you're talking about, but it sounds funny.

I'm not sure there's always a direct relation, but I get a kick out of it whenever something from the DU winds up on the daily show :)

3. I think you're right, and it's time for them to come clean
Well, not really. It'd be nice if they mentioned DU on the air, but it's enough just to know they're reading :)

BTW, is "baby panda" referring to something specific, or is it a figure of speech?

5. Maybe it's just their writers that lurk DU.
Then they go up to Stewart or Colbert, "Hey, I just thought of a cool idea!"

:D

7. So what does the band 'MC 900 Foot Jesus" have to say?
"Mister Colbert, RIAA attorney on line 1!"

8. I remember them/him, and
I was trying to think of a snappy response involving song titles or lyrics, but I'm drawing a blank. I remember liking the video for "If I Only Had a Brain," though, and I always thought it was a cool name :)
