18. Let's just break down that screen shot, shall we:
They've both got their hoods up--apparently to indicate the extreme cold of the place--but what do we see in the lower left? LIQUID water!

COME ON Hollywood! No self-respecting Minnesota Norwegian Bachelor Farmer would dream of wearing his hood up on such a warm day. ;)

PS for no name no slogan, I'm 1/4 Norwegian and 1/4 Swede--I'm all about the Uff Da and the ja sure!

25. Oh what the Christ
They shot that film during one of the warmest MN winters on record (1995). If you look at that whole scene, you can tell that it's not only above freezing, but that it's probably in the high 40s/lower 50s, if not warmer.

how?

1) The standing water in the street. It's definitely above freezing. Most of the snow in the scene looks like it has melted/refrozen a couple times, too.

2) No breath steam coming out of anyone's mouth. If it were really that cold and moist, you'd be able to see the characters' breath. But you don't.

3) No wind at all. Look at the fir lining on the parkas. If it were truly a Minnesota winter in a small town in Northern Minnesota, there'd be a slight breeze. There's nothing going on there.

4) Cloudy day. If it's cloudy on a winter day, chances are the temps are in the 20s at a minimum, but probably warmer. The clouds keep the cold air close to the earth and can make a 10 degrees difference on many days. Everybody from the north country knows that the coldest days in winter are the ones where there's not a cloud in the sky.

I could go on about the movie's weather (like most Minnesotans can-- it's a religion here), but I don't want to crash DU's servers.

26. I thought so, we are in complete agreement then!
Maybe I'll let you slide for the "yah" perfidy then. ;)

I reacted to the scene like this when I saw it in the theater--but then I cut 'em a little slack--after all you film in the winter you've got, not the winter you'd like! :hide:

Plus, I've kinda wondered how many Americans would have no idea whatsoever what we are talking about. Agter all, the US is a decidedly warm weather country.

35. That's funny, every Minnesotan I know thought the same thing
the first time they saw it. They KNEW right away that it was way too warm to be bundled up like that. Those who've never had the pleasure of a MN winter day thought it was perfectly normal. :P
