1. That film is considered by some to be te worst movie ever made
I haven't seen it, but it has gone into nerd folklore. It must be pretty awful.

if anything, you should see "Ed Wood" Johnny Depp is excellent and Martin Landau IS Bela Lagousi.

28. Martin Landau's Oscar for it was the best-deserved Oscar of the 1990s.

19. It's not as bad as its reputation suggests.

In fact, I've seen movies made in the last decade that were far worse in terms of technical ability, cheap special effects usage, and wooden acting. My wife is a screener for a bunch of film festivals around the country, so she gets to see films people ("outsiders") have submitted and judge which ones are worthy of inclusion in said festivals, and we've seen some of the worst pieces of shit ever made....movies so bad they have literally made us cry.

Two that particularly stick out in my mind were "Blindside," a very very cheap "science fiction" film made in 1999 where all the action takes place off screen. Since the budget didn't allow for special effects, you'd see a shot where a person walks into the frame and says, "Well, I just got back from fighting so-and-so, and they had laser guns," etc. The plot concerned aliens from another planet, and you knew who the aliens were, because they were the ones wearing black t-shirts and sunglasses. Excruciating.

The other one was "Death of a Barefoot Tour Guide,' a "quirky" movie made in Indianapolis by a bunch of people who, I think, were trying to pretend they were high on drugs or something. It was obvious the filmmakers were trying too hard, since all the supposed "eccentricities" were merely dull, the dilaogue stilted and the camerawork like that of a gifted three year old.

There's a sad, sad, neglected "homepage" for the movie "Death of a Barefoot Tour Guide." This movie was so fucking bad, my wife and I actually cried while watching it. I wish we still had a copy....In twenty years, it'll probably be the next "Plan 9" or "Manos: The Hands of Fate."

9. "Plan 9" is the ultimate argument for the auteur theory
The film is technically bad yet remarkably entertaining largely because it is the unselfconscious product of one director's personal vision.

11. true, hubby's ucla film, and has mentioned that "if you want to see...
what film students are really capable of, you do not hand them unlimited budgets for student thesis work; you hand them a Philip's screwdriver, a roll of duct tape, and a half filled bag of popcorn styrofoam and tell them to get busy cause they only have 45min left"

Plan 9, is born of similar passion & random creativity

I can't think of anything more fun than "Plan 9" at The Castro! I have a feeling there will be dozens of drag Vampiras for the red carpet affair. :)

Can't be missed!

13. Yup, THE Castro!
It is going to be a blast!

The special events there never disappoint. I've been to several of the John Water's Christmases (sp?), one with a cha-cha heels contest. The "Cockettes" premiere, where I sat next to a Divine look-a-like (I helped her get her cleavage just right). A showing of "The Poseiden Adventure" featured star Carol Linley recreating her drowoning scene. And nothing says night of fun at The Castro like "The Wizard of Oz" -- Glinda's for days!

Sorry you can't make it -- will try to take snaps and post them! :hi:

I have a dvd of Plan 9 but I haven't watched it.

I also have the anniversary edition of Ed Wood DVD, which has Ed Wood's other masterpiece, Glen or Glenda. :D

You must watch Ed Wood to appreciate this "work." :D

16. The original Johnny Simons play"Hubcaps Aflame Over Hollywood"
which is the story of Ed Wood.

Simons is a local live theatre person in Ft Worth, also faculty at UNC, very very creative,
The production was outdoors, in the fall, the old guy who played Bela was awesome (but he does all his parts well)..and the "special effects" were low budget at best. But it was very good.

Wish I had the video.

17. A wise person, whose name I forget, once said:
"Plan 9 From Outer Space" couldn't POSSIBLY be the worst film ever, because the worst film ever would be boring!"

How true. Whatever else "Plan 9" is, it isn't boring.

20. See, I diagree
I think you have to take into account the motivations of the director/writer/producer. If for example you thought you were making a sequel to a can't miss franchise and produced Batman & Robin then that is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, movie.

The following films fall under that definition:
Zardoz,
Armaggedon,
Alexander,
Daredevil
Episodes 1-3 of Star Wars

And films like:
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes,
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
Deathrace 2000

Are just awesome camp-a-thons...

(Big fan of MST3K and Jabootu)
I find that the most excrutiating movies to sit through, the ones that make me long for death, are Joe Don Baker movies

24. I don't think Plan 9 is Ed Woods worst movie, that honour goes to ...
'Glen or Glenda' - I sat all the way through that film and wish to God I hadn't. Thankfully it is a short.

I don't think Plan 9 was awarded the worst ever film but Mr. Wood was dubbed the worst director of all time.
