Are there any dj's in the lounge? I have a question, ...please
Once upon a time, my husband was a dj. He misses playing around with music and he's been looking into getting a digital (laptop dj) set-up so that he can play around at home for fun.

We live in an apt. which is part of the reason why he wants to explore this option as opposed to using his old turntables (we don't have enough space). We have a laptop. Could anyone give me an idea about how much we should plan to spend to get an appropriate amplifier and speakers to utilize with laptop mixing software?

Thanks so much for any advice!

3. I would hit up local music shops and seek advice there.
Or find a forum on the subject on the internet. All we can give you is advice about what we use. I doubt any of us have tried out all the tools available. People will say what they use is the best. With something like this I would hunt down where to find experts. I would tell you to get a Mac.. Helpful? It shouldn't be.

4. I'm not a DJ
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 06:15 AM by fujiyama
but in recent weeks I've looked at DJ related equipment - mainly pro amps (but I'm using them for home theater use).

It really depends on the kind of power you will need and/or want. The amp alone will atleast be around 200 bucks. That's low end. I'm guessing the speakers will be another 200-500...I have no idea about software, but all said and done for a "lower end" setup, I would guess around 800-1200 bucks...Though, depending on your power needs, you may be able to get a decent amp and speakers combo of some sort for around 500 bucks.

I would check out a guitar center if you have one nearby. They have some equipment but amps are something that last a while which is why I went used - crown and qsc have good warranties and I believe Crown's is 3 years transferrable. Ebay has a lot of them. As always, good seller feedback is essential.

Good luck. The only problem is, you'll keep wanting to spend more and more on this stuff.

That would be great. I was just reading the toilet paper thread - lol.

A meetup would be really cool. Let me know if anything is going on.

10. Morning, Bliss!
I do ALL my music mixing on the computer, so I know how much fun that is. Is your husband planning on DJ'ing for a living again or is he just going to do it for personal use like me? There are a LOT of software programs out there and I've tried a lot of them. I have three suggestions for him for software, and here are the links to their websites:
http://www.djpower.com/Overview.htm
http://www.visiosonic.com/
http://otsdj.com/about/

My pick of those three is OtsDJ. It is made for Radio Stations and DJ's and is completely automated. He can just create the playlist, push play, and the software does the rest! It mixes the songs together with no input from the DJ leaving his hands free for other things. It also has a dynamic processor so that every song is played at the same volume level!

As far as Amp's and things go...there are DJ stores all over that have a large selection of everything he would need...but they are going to be expensive. You might also check eBay for good deals on equipment. You'll save money that way.

Hope this helps.

12. Hey Clintmax!!
How are you? I'm so sorry I missed your post--I signed off just prior to the time you posted and missed you. :(

Good to see you:hi:

I'll check out the links and let him know of your personal recommendation for otsdj.com. Regarding your question--would it matter if one is utilizing the software for at home use vs. at a pro gig, which software they should select? If so, I'll keep that in mind when we're shopping.

I'd love to try it out myself at home--it sounds like fun! When we talk about music, he seems to think my hs record collection rivaled his--lol.

His cousin is getting married in the fall. We haven't talked about it, but maybe as a favor he could be considering offering to offer to mp3 dj for them, I'm not sure though. They may want the benefit of a pro vs. a retired pro--lol.

Thanks so much, for your recommendations and advice--it was most helpful!

11. Try this site
www.logitech.com. I work at a radio station that went digital two years ago and we get a lot of information from this company. Good luck.
