Neither visit for me. But for 2 friends of mine.

Let me tell you that i am very glad that the women who got pregnant did not choose to actually carry the pregnancy to term. They would have made horrendous mothers. The impregnators were also too young and or too much of an asshole to have made a good parent.

I am sure that at some point these friends of mine will make good mothers. But at the time when they were too stupid to even understand birth control, they would never understand the full responsibility of motherhood/parenting.

I dont know why i feel compelled to say this but i do:- should young girls who cant master birth control be allowed to mess with the live of a child?

I am glad my friends made the decisions they made. I hope their daughters will still have this choice.

i shouldnt be up for so long...it makes me hate the world!

3. Birth Conrol, Even Used Properly, Can Fail
Your friends may have done something wrong, or not. Either way, I'm glad they got to make their own decisions, and that they had a good friend.

4. Some of my brother's girlfriends aborted babies
Especially considering what happened to his only child (that I know of) it was certainly the right choice. I still worry about my niece, even though I haven't seen or heard from her in several years. If there were others out there living the kind of life she was living....shudder.

I have gone with a friend or two to the clinic. It was a difficult decision, but the choice was theirs. Wish the antis would mind their own frigging business.

11. I've been along for three total.
None were for myself. The first was w/ a friend when she was eighteen. She had just left an abusive relationship and found out she was pregnant by him. She decided to end the pregnancy-she didn't want him to have any more power over her than he already had. At least she had the support of a friend and her mother there w/ her while we waited.

The second was when I was 22. A nineteen year old coworker found out she was pregnant. She was fighting an addiction to meth and decided that she did not want to have a child who might have been-she was still doing meth when she got pregnant. She aborted at 4 1/2 months. By then she was clean but was afraid. I drove her there and back.

The third was for another coworker. She had heard that I had gone along w/ the other coworker. She was forty and had five children. Her husband had left her and she knew she couldn't afford yet another child. She made that decision for the sake of her other children since she was raising them by herself.

Three abortions, three different situations, three different drives across state lines. I fought with protesters twice-one who followed me and my friend's mother into a restaurant while my friend was getting the procedure done.

I'd do it again if anyone asked me to.

12. I've taken and been with more than my fair share
of women getting abortions. In every case, knowing the facts, I believed it to be the best decision. And I'd do it again.

What strikes me most in what you said is this : "across states lines".

Yeah, that's right. Roe v. Wade is alive and well. Sure..... Can't even get a safe abortion in your own state, never mind community. How many women can't afford to go out of state? And if they can do that - what about the waiting period that exists in some places? Or notification requirements?

Let's face it, kids, legal abortion is becoming a legal myth. Sure, abortion is still a part of constitutionally protected privacy.... but how do you exercise a right that can't be exercised?

Khash.

14. You can obtain them in MO.
They cost more, are harder to set up appointments for and some places keep it private, performing them only a couple of times a month. Some are also not as reputable as others.

For years now MO women have driven across the borders into Illinois and Kansas. Missouri has always made it hard for a woman to obtain an abortion. Planned Parenthood has had large budget cuts in Missouri over the years and have had to close many of their offices. And now Missouri is planning on putting fetal heart monitors in every clinic and plans to make each woman listen to the heartbeat of that fetus. It's a slap in the face, if you ask me. And I believe that Missouri has had parental notification laws in place for years now-I don't remember a single girl in high school getting their abortions in Missouri out of fear that their parents would find out.

Kansas had monitors. You technically had to view the fetus before you could get the abortion but many clinic workers would warn them that they had to show them, quickly turn the screen their way and turn it right back-in the blink of an eye. Kansas does have a driver law-the driver must be 21 for the woman to receive the abortion(at least that was the case in the 90's). Both times that I drove I had to show my drivers license from Missouri as proof of age.

15. Interesting about the driver law
in some jurisdictions, if you are an adult and drive a minor across state lines to get an abortion you can face legal action. Even if you are a family member...

Hey, sweetgirl, have you seen Citizen Ruth? If not check it out. I love that movie :) Pregnant drug addict (with umpteen kids) is told she can have an abortion and get a minimum sentence or stay in jail until the baby is born - and she quickly becomes a tug of war between both sides. I've never laughed so hard.

17. MO is one of those states.
You technically cannot drive a minor across the border to obtain an abortion. Abortions are a very discreet matter here-no one admits to them or where to get them at unless it is to someone you can trust.

And I have watched Citizen Ruth.

13. Well said, lioness.
I've seen what happens to people who try to raise children before they're ready, and it isn't very pretty.

16. Good for you, lioness!
I strongly believe in the right to abortion.....

We need to take care of the people who are ALREADY HERE! And we aren't...

It really makes me angry as all hell that we interfere in what should be a very private decision!

18. Good post
I was 26 when I had an abortion. I had two kids already, was married and using birth control. My husband was out of work, I was supporting the family and our marriage was not doing well (we divorced the following year). I could not see bringing another child into the world under those conditions.

Contrary to what some people will tell you, the great majority of women who have abortions don't just use them as birth control, or not think too much about it, or think it's not a real big thing. Most of them agonize over the decision like I did, and worry about whether they're making the right one. Most of them are choosing what they see as the lesser of two evils and most of them are thinking about the child's future, not their own.

I still feel I made the correct decision but I also, almost 20 years later, occasionally wonder what that child would have been like. It's not an easy choice by any means, but I'm so thankful I had it. You were a good friend to those women, lioness -

19. My friend from high school
and I talked about her abortion a few years ago. She has three children now and has been married for six years. She said that she knew it was the best decision for her but she wondered what it would have looked like and would have been like sometimes.

It's never an easy choice for anyone.
