my coworker died
what do you write about something like this?

one of my coworkers has died. Suddenly, horribly, in an auto crash, someones life has been cut short. people are crying, the phone is ringing, the world has turned upside down and still the library must function. we were all dazed and shocked, moving around and working but not doing anything, trying to comprehend this new reality thrust upon us.
This man that died, he was a good man. He was a father and a husband, a coach and a good friend. He took me in, he trusted me, he argued with me, he annoyed the hell out of me, he called me his friend. I have worked there for little over a year. Known him for only that long. His eldest son was at work that day, he brought him over to me and said "here's that lady I complain about so much at home". I annoyed him too, apparently. But for all that, he still took me in his regard. He looked out for me, he lectured me, I lectured back, we made peace until I annoyed him again. The last night we worked together, the day before he died, we laughed so hard there were tears in our eyes. It had been a long two days stuck at the desk and we were both punchy. Someone had left a disgusting mess in the toilet in the mens, and he had found it. He came out holding his hands apart - it's this big! He wanted me to take a picture of it for posterity and he was laughing so hard, he was so full of life. I flatly refused, instead telling him my own disgusting bathroom stories, and we laughed till we cried. Once we had closed and locked the doors, he left because his family was waiting for him outside, and he was devoted to his wife and his kids.

I came home tonight to a peaceful house. I helped my daughter do homework, I put them both to bed and kissed their foreheads. I am still dazed and shocked. I cried writing this, I have cried all day long. Tomorrow I will go back to work and he will not be there. Today his children woke up and he was not there. My heart aches for them and his wife, there are no words to console them, their world has been ripped apart. My loss is small compared to theirs.

I keep thinking - just like that. Just like that - the world splits around you. Just like that - poof! - you're dead. You, me, anybody. We're all dying and we all know it, but we always think we have the luxury of time. My friend was gonna coach again this year, he was already putting his game together to be ready for the season. He had plenty of time, he was still young, as were his children, they were his joy. He used his time here well. He was a credit to his family, a model for his community, a friend to many. I will miss him.

I am going to post this and go to bed. It has been a long horrible day and tomorrow ain't looking much better. I am sorry to post and run but I had to get it out of my system or I will never be able to sleep. I will check it at work tomorrow. Or maybe later if I can't sleep.

GOD life is cruel.

1. Life is quirky..
My best friend's son made a choice to not stay over at a friend's place after a party..He did not want to be late for work the next morning, so he decided to ride home with a friend..7 blocks from his place..3 blocks from his Mom's place..they were involved in a car accident, and Jeff died..he was almost 24...No one else in the accident was hurt..2 cars..4 people..and he died..

I know how you feel

2. I'm sorry
Sounds like you two had a very good relationship, even though you disagreed with each other at times, and annoyed each other at times. From what you write, you both had respect for each other. It's so sad that he died so suddenly.

5. So sad...
I'm sorry for your loss and for the loss of everyone else who loved this man...

It's very easy to lose perspective on life sometimes, how easily it comes and goes, in the day to day worries that we all experience.

Really good people. Got some flaws but make up for it with integrity. You were honored by his trust and friendship. Do what you can for his family and always know that life is indeed short.

I am back at work today, and it is so sad to be here. Since I am the children's librarian, and have a scheduled program to do, I am stuck. Very few of my coworkers made it in.....
Thanks for thwe kind words and hugs.. no one close to me has ever died before. I still can't wrap my mind around him being gone.

10. Yes, life sucks
we lost a co-worker last year after an operation. I wasn't even as close to him as you were to your co-worker and still it was a hell of a shock.

Do your program with the kids, take in their joy to give you some comfort

13. Sorry to hear that north houston dem,
One of my biggest fears is getting in another car crash. I've been in a surprising number of horrific car crashes and escaped only through the will of God.

So I hope your faith or beliefs will help you through this.

18. Sorry for your loss.
If you're interested in maintaining your connection with your friend in a post-cognitive way, here's something that I've used with success. Here's a "meditation" that will give the two of you access to each other for awhile longer. I figure three days or so.

Connecting with a loved one over distance/time. See yourself in the center of a perfectly formed, comfortably large circle. Fill it with gentle, golden flame, moving through you and all around you. Breathe normally. *Let* yourself breathe. Don't *make* yourself breathe. It may change into and egg. If it moves or changes, let it. If you get sensations and feelings moving, have them and watch things progress. This means your processing what you've been holding and going through. Breathing normally and paying attention to the image and your breath stabilizes the images and the experience.

After you see the images as being stable and while you're in the middle of them, ask to be with yor friend. You should be right there. The two of you will have unfettered access to each other and anything you want will be able to pass between you. See him in his own circle also surrounded, inside and out, with gentle golden flame. You'll feel/see flame, sensations and emotions transmitting back and forth between you. It may be intense at first. With renewed effort, the intensity will lessen as things get exchanged between the two of you and your situations come more into balance. Just focus on the image and breathe normally.

Once things have settle down, you can come into further balance by changing the flame to violet.

Duration brings increased benefits, as does frequency even though a minute or so at any one time brings benefits if you don't want to do more at any sitting.

19. There is never any rhyme or reason to the things that life thrusts at us.
I was just saying today to a friend that we go through life with our lives 'set' in our heads. We think we know where we are headed and how things will turn out. Then, somehow, we take a detour - or LIFE detoured on us. Either way - it hardly ever ends up looking like we thought it would.

I am so sorry for your loss and the shock of it. I've been in your shoes and there are no words in our language to help us comprehend such things.

Your tribute to your friend is touching.
It will get better.

25. Thank you all.
I did the storytime. It was a seuss storytime because the good doctor's birthday was last week. Put on the cat suit, did my spiel, and went home at noon. The phone was still ringing a lot, people calling to see if it is true. He had a lot of friends in our system, he'd been there a lot longer than me.

Slept most of the day away because I didn't sleep at all last night.
Not from lack of trying - I just couldn't. The word is the funeral will be this weekend.

I appreciate all your sympathy and well wishes. I don't post a lot, lurking is more my style, but I read here regularly and laugh heartily at lounge silliness. You guys rock.
