Guilty pleasures.
Mine:

a violent, sexist movie: "The Long Kiss Goodnight"

a sexist, dick-joke-slinging comedian: Robert Schimmel

super-light, fluffy, mystery series involving animals that talk: the "Mrs. Murphy Mysteries" by Rita Mae Brown (these books' existence probably insult uber-intellectuals -- of which I am NOT one)

Yours?

Pro wrestling

Singletrack Copper Ale/Sierra Nevada IPA

Knowing that, no matter what, I've got a great lawyer (snip, snip)

Lots of praise from lots of people for shit I'd be doing anyway, regardless

Kisses on my face, every day, from dogs that'd been put down for their alleged viciousnesss.

Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 09:54 PM by khashka
Absolute fluff. Silly beyond belief. And yet....

Wait wait wait, Bertha. You as a lesbian are required to like them! For me as a gay man it becomes a guilty pleasure!

Sheesh! Girls just don't know their place any more!

(Ever met Rita Mae Brown? She's a laugh riot and uber sweet. When I got High Hearts signed, she grabbed me by the collar and kissed me. Being gay is so great, she said, but have you considered being a lesbian, instead? I was a little stunned. But if she'd kiss me again I'd surely consider it.......)

30. I believe Rita Mae Brown truly writes what she knows.
I think she's bisexual. If not, she certainly has absolutely no rigid standards for sexuality or gender identity -- she's one of a kind. She lets people be exactly who they are, without expecting them to conform to her own impressions.

At least, that's the sense I get from her books, and I have read them all.

You lucky god damned devil, Khash. Oh, for a kiss from Rita Mae . . .

11. Why guilty? Are you just talking about the stuff they play on the radio?

Most rap on the radio is horrible and is a diluted form of hip hop. Real hip hop is intelligent, thought provoking, and both musically and lyrically innovative (like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, The Coup, ect). And it's nothing to be ashamed of.

13. oh, but I am ashamed
considering I posted a major flamebait semi-anti-hip-hop thread last night

and I still feel guilty

In truth, I believe that not all hip hop sucks. Especially not the stuff that's "intelligent, thought provoking, and both musically and lyrically innovative (like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, The Coup, ect)."

14. I missed the big debates (except for one thread).
Edited on Mon Mar-06-06 11:39 PM by TroubleMan
Most people frame the debate on hip hop, because they believe that the radio rap is what hip hop is. It's not - it's a pop version of hip hop. Any time you take a genre, dumb it down, and mass produce it for mass consumption, it's gonna suck. I won't judge country by Brooks & Dun or Billy Ray Cyrus, and I won't judge rock by Nelson or Warrant. However, people will readily judge hip hop by looking at Lil' Jon or Nelly, who are some of the worst examples.

Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 01:26 AM by mvd
I prefer more traditional vocals and more melody than flow. Just becasuse something is on the radio doesn't mean it's dumbed down. I think Kanye West and Eminem are good at hip hop. Brooks And Dunn are good at country. You have more of a point with Billy Ray IMO, though some of his early songs were enjoyable.

31. Hey, Big Will
Yep, Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.

My favorite quote from that movie, Jackson to Davis:

"When I first met you, you were all like, 'Oh, phooey, I burned the darned muffins.' Now, you walk into a bar, ten minutes later sailors come runnin' out. What up with that?"

What a fun movie.

Oh yeah, and: "Suck my dick. Every one of you."

I read Stephen King, sometimes eat popcorn for breakfast,at times watch "The Apprentice",buy marshmallows for cocoa and they never seem to last long enough for the cocoa, read message boards about European royalty(although I'm a firm anti-monarchist)...just to name a few.

At the risk of being smacked, it looks a little like Kenneth Branagh.

Michael Collins maybe? (shows you what a stereotypical American I am -- so ignorant)

10. "Drawn Together" (the TV show) - "Jam On It" and "Apache" (old rap songs)
Apache is like the dumbest song Sugarhill ever did, but I can't help liking it.

If you understand the genres it makes fun of, "Drawn Together" is often brilliant and extremely intelligent (though it's mostly just dumb fun).

Oh, I love that you put this on the list. The reason I saw it in the first place was that I heard from someone that they were making a sequel, to be called "Dude, Seriously, Where's My Car?" That's just comedy genius. I think it's hilarious.

You may enjoy the similarly stupid/hilarious "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle".

When I think "shouldn't I be reading. . . ." it's usually one of the hundred and twelve history books I've got laying around here, or at least the latest issue of "The Nation." Instead it's usually a fluffy paperback mystery. "Because they're easier to hold in bed..." :eyes:
