TMI!! TMI Overload! Somebody get me a Sandblaster!
The amount of information I was forced to absorb about one of my neighbors yesterday was bad enough. We were at a small cookout. She was on a Leaving Las Vegas-style alcoholic bender and giving me details, the terrible and lurid details and then one shocking thing revaled after another about her life. I am living in an apartment complex where I live alone, I work on my artwork on my off-time, and sometimes I want to get on DU or read or talk on the phone. Or stare at the wall.

So when I get knocks on my door every couple of hours from people who I don't know or barely know, drugged out of their minds and/or NEEDING something, I get jumpy. I usually don't answer the door, but the knocking gets persistent. I've complained about it, of course. The girl I'm talking about has knocked, too. I felt sorry for her. My neighborhood is full of people like this, and my relatively generous nature has been tried to the breaking point.

When one of these people approaches me outside on the way in, they start telling me some awful story that I really don't have time to hear. I feel profoundly slimed by it. Today at work, a girl who works in our company started telling me the details of how she has the stomach flu and needed to go home. Details from a person I barely know.

I need a sandblaster, earplugs, very dark glasses. Somebody hold me; I'm feeling fragile.

1. Eew...maybe you should get a flame thrower.

20. I second that. I mean, what are you, Dr. Phil/Social Services?
Your neighbors sound like they need to be locked in an insane asylum. I can't truly advocate the flamethrower approach, because: no. But you should invest in those dark glasses, and...stay away from alcoholics and drug addicts. I live with two of those and it isn't wise or safe.

23. BlueIris, I think, for that, you should come to my "compliment"
thread. That was so good to hear. YES, they belong in an insane aylum, and YES, there's doubtless going to be one or several people asking me to "have compassion" or "understand". What these people can't fathom is that I'm a bit FRIGHTENED, b/c half these people have fucking GUNS.

Thank you for being so cool.

2. Hugs, dude....
Sorry the world is dumping on your right now - they must read you well and know you're sympathetic, which is quite a double-edged sword... for the reasons you mention  Learn the mantra and repeat after me "I'm sorry, I don't have time right now"

5. "I'm sorry, I don't have time right now"
Thank you, my dearest. I sometimes feel like I have to hold my hand up when I say that, and sometimes I have to say it really loudly.

14. You should check out the advice column
at www.tomatonation.com... she gives a lot of that kind of advice, and it helps to read it a lot, for me, at least. To remind me that it's ok to put myself and my emotional well-being first, sometimes

6. Some people don't have any sense of personal boundaries.
...so, they give us a good opportunity to practice our setting our own.

I can very much relate to your situation, Sugar Smack, b/c I volunteer with Hospice and hear a LOT of really sad stories.

It's a real piece of emotional work to be fully present with somebody, and yet still be clear about your boundaries and what you're willing to take on.

Take good care of yourself, my friend. :loveya:

11. That was amazing. Thank you for that.
I get so tired and when I come home I want that time to be for me and my friends. Me & my cat. I don't want to be looked at as a help station for the neighbors.

That reply was wonderful. It's hard to set boundaries when you yourself have been at low points at one time or another. :loveya:

The only thing that stifles my bitch vibes, which I have and own, is the thought of one or more of these freaks having a gun.

Thank you for your wonderful reply. BIG hugs back to you!!!
