Where do you shop for clothes?
Me? I like Old Navy (clothing for the masses - something I'm behind), Ross (cheap but takes time to find what you want) and Mervyn's (cheap, and easier to find stuff.)

What about you?

And anyone who says they only wear Tibetan-woven yak's fur produced by the happy locals of Lhasa is a POSER!!!!

1. Probably the same place Laura Bush does
I hate shopping for clothes. When I have to, I just go to JC Penney and get a couple of pre-coordinated polyester Alfred Dunner or Koret or Sag Harbor outfits.

2. Piller's. And I'm bummed, because
this place, which I have gone to for most of my clothes for decades has closed down. They sold good brands of clothes and shoes - but about a season behind - at 50-95% off. In fact - it is the only place I have ever seen Bruno Magli shoes. My late father bought all his shoes there too, some may have been Bruno Magli - and he wore size 12...maybe HE was the REAL KILLER in the OJ case!

3. I sort of hate to admit that I shop at Old Navy
Because, 1) the Old Navy ads on television give new meaning to the word "idiotic" and 2) I have these images of 14 year old Indonesian kids churning those clothes.

But Old Navy's prices are the selling points.

I also get my clothes at Marshall's.

4. Thrift stores first (unless I need sox or undies, prefer not to buy those
'road tested' so to speak!)
If I can't find it at the thrift stores then I usually look at Shopko, Target or Kohl's.

40. Yeah, me too...
I love shopping at thrift stores. :loveya: You can find really expensive clothes for next to nothing, once I found a cashmire sweater for 65 cents. :bounce: I could afford to buy all my clothes brand new but just love the challenge of finding the stuff second hand and getting a bargin. :-)

5. I get a lot of stuff online
Blair.com has very nice stuff at reasonable prices, and in many cases I buy from kingsizedirect.com because they have very nice big & tall stuff and they also have a lot of those cool rayon print shirts with dragons and anime and stuff on them that will actually fit me.

33. Hey, thanks for that link to kingsizedirect!
I'm always looking for stuff that'll fit my husband and stepsons, and that place has great prices. It's really hard to find a nice leather coat in 2XL Tall, and they have full-length dress coats for $149. Thanks!

9. wow...must be a pain to find parking
I'd be stressed after crossing the Atlantic, or taking the super-secret back route through the Bering Strait and coming up through the Trans Siberian only to have to deal with Italian Parking. :-D

18. : P
Italian parking is much simpler to deal with than Italian driving.

My parents were born and raised in Parma. I have a great many relatives there. My father's business takes him back to Italy several times per year. Mum & I would shop while he conducted his business.

Really well-made selections last a good long time.

For the remainder of my clothing, I sew and make or alter a good many of my own garments. And I do pick up pieces now and again at charity shops.

7. This has become more complicated...
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 01:06 PM by VelmaD
since I lost all the weight. I used to be stuck with Lane Bryant because they were the only place that carried stuff my size. Now that I'm a 10/12 I'm still figuring out where I shop. It's really damn difficult. Everything fun is too casual for work and everything work appropriate looks like it was designed for middle-aged matrons. (Nothing against the middle-aged ladies on DU - I just don't wanta dress like my best friend's mother-in-law.)

14. Try Ann Taylor Loft or Lerner's
They have fun stuff that doesn't look like it's designed for skinny 18-year-olds or dumpy old matrons (no offense to either, but you know what I mean). The work stuff, especially at Lerner's, is stylish yet classy and not too revealing or casual.

I'm the same size as you, and in my early 30s and still 'young at heart', so I understand the problem. Also, budget is a problem with me, so I always keep an eye out for sales and buy stuff off-season (Lerner's has excellent sales!). Also, this is weird - but I have had decent luck at Express with tops and sweaters and slacks.

25. I know you're not a shy, retiring little thing so
if you see a woman wearing clothing you like, speak right up. Tell her you've recently lost weight and you're looking for some new places to shop. Most folks would be flattered.

Online is a great source, too. My friend Lynne is about your size and she get's some really unusual things at Coldwater Creek online. May not be to your liking, but there are a great many purveyors online, some of which would likely suit.

8. Value Village!
I just picked up a pair of Anne Taylor pants with a matching Laura Ashley shirt, both brand new, for a total of $12.

I hope I got the designers' names right; they're expensive clothes, anyway, and it was famous labels that seriousy impress people.

...I gave Value Village a screen credit as "costume designer." It always got a laugh, but it's true -- it's the first place aspiring actors check out when they need an interesting costume.

19. I like Lane Bryant...
Basically because it's hard to find jeans to fit my short waist, and they have them that look right. I also like tshirts from anywhere. And being in oklahoma I have several Eskimo Joe's shirts. If you have never heard of Eskimo Joe's, is a restaurant in Stillwater, OK, that serves good food (I think, I've never eaten there.), and they sell famous tshirts. ( www.eskimojoes.com ) Anyway, and I love Old Navy sweaters because they're cheap. Anyway. I get shoes at Shoe Carnival. I'm a T-shirt and jeans or track pants kind of girl. I bought all my track pants at WalMart. Basically, Mom and I were there, and they were cheap, so we bought them. I'm becoming more and more anti walmart, but Target is so far away. And IGA sucks. So, we're stuck, please don't beat me over the head.

I also hit outlets in Wrentham (MA) and Elizabeth NJ, Kittery, ME and Leesburg, VA when I'm traveling for business. I definately go out of my way for a bargain!

39. Outlet malls first, Marshall's second
Too weird, GOPisEvil. Although I trust neither one of us purchased any of our cars there.

I've shopped at Marshall's for 20+ years, particularly knit shirts and casual pants. Brand name stuff a season or so "late" for 15 bucks. Never thought I'd beat those bargains until these outlet malls began sprouting. In particular, I stock up in Pennsylvania during summer trips -- outlet prices and no sales tax, to boot.

17. Brooks Bros. -- need XL Tall sizes, and BB still makes good duds.
A little staid, perhaps, but their threads last. Land's End and Bean work well for the casual stuff.

At 6'5", 224 lbs., it was *tough* finding sizes before catalogs/Web. Nordstrom was/is the only mall-type retailer that carried tall sizes in any quantity.

24. Thrift Stores and department stores
Depends on what I'm looking for.

Thrift Stores are usually good for everyday casual wear. And buying a silk blouse for $1.50 thrills me to the core! :D

I'll go to a department store for classics and suits to get the right fit. I'm petite so I prefer places with large petites sections.

I buy 75% of my clothes at Marshall Field's.

I also like going to a local name-brand discount place called Value City.

Oh, and Sportmart. I buy a lot of clothes at Sportmart, shoes especially.

Sears, Yonkers, J.C. Penny, Marshall Fields, and Kohl's. I often buy stuff on sale whe I shop, but I only go clothes shopping a few times per year. I don't need to wear the latest fashions. I have to wear a uniform at work too.

32. Depends what I'm after
If I want casual shirts, Target. If I want a pair of shorts, K-Mart. For suits and dresses and blouses and summer clothes, Value Village (Value Village rocks for small sizes - you can usually find things that have never even been worn for a couple dollars). For jeans and undies, you can't beat Ross, but it takes some digging. For shoes and nice sweaters, Nordstrom Rack. I buy a lot of jeans at the Levis Outlet store, because the only jeans that really fit me right are the 518 Superlows. I always find something I like (and can afford) at Mervyn's. For coats, JC Penney. For good tailored slacks, Eddie Bauer Outlet (can't afford the regular Eddie Bauer prices). For fancy underwear, Bon Marche or Victoria's Secret.

if I need something more than jeans and a top.

I recently bought a coat, pair of boots, couple of sweaters and a couple of casual/dressy pant outfits I could wear for the holidays.
They have petite sizes and since I wear a size 2, I can buy their petite/small size and it fits me perfectly. I took a chance on the boots because I have very wide feet (d width) and I bought a regular size 6 which feel great and look great too.
